Green is essential. Electric (or hydrogen fuel) is the only way to get absolutely carbon-emissions free cars. Of course, individually owned and operated cars will be gone in 50 years... not that I'll be around to see that.
You are a wise man........green and the development of high mpg vehicles and sustainable transportation is essential and I don't understand how or why anybody can oppose it. I'm betting most vehicles will be leased over owned in the not so distant future. A fixed monthly payment for the vehicle including fuel and maintenance.

The other model that may work is "auto-uber" -- the self-driving car shows up on time, takes you to your destination, and is released to the next customer. Huge reduction in parking space, fuel, and other consumables while preserving "freedom of motion"-- our apparently god-given right not to ride a bus.

Extrapolate the lease versus owning idea into dystopia - everyone pays fees for access to autonomous self-driving vehicles. :boink:
That may well be where we end up. And whether or not it's dystopian depends on your cultural norms. When things get hot enough, crowded enough, hungry enough, and dry enough -- autonomous self-driving electric vehicles become normative, and self-driven, personally owned cars get rocks thrown at them for selfishness in a time of environmental penury.

Want to see the REALLY dystopian vision? Read "The Water Knife," a horrific novel about dealing with a 50-year drought in the western states. It will make your blood stop running -- not enough liquid to keep it flowing!

that being the case for you .... I hope you will find whatever form or transportation suits your wants and needs
While I understand, and agree with your points, I'm not sure that Elio's will largely be replacing vehicles that normally get 25 MPG Hwy...simply because most vehicles at that efficiency are bought for their utility.

If I had to guess the Avg. ICE vehicle replaced by an Elio would mos likely be in the ~32 Combined MPG range, and an Avg. new cost of $23,000. There is also that the ~75 mpg Elio number is Hwy...and most often the combined number is used when comparing efficiency. The Elio would be around ~ 60 MPG.

Either way, I agree that the Elio is a very environmentally friendly vehicle...probably just not quite as environmentally friendly as your example. I would also say that "Case D" needs the word "new vehicle" attached to it. You can get used Leafs for around $10k, and many States in the US will return above 85MPG when factoring where the electricity is sourced.
Just imagine how cheap a used Elio will be if a new replacement is only $6800. THAT would be a great value.

I can actually see it being something like having a big boat motor go bad and learn that often pays to buy a new boat, motor and trailer than it is to replace just the boat motor

Serious question: For all the talk of self-driving vehicles, I've yet to hear anyone address rural or seriously off-road destinations. I get how such vehicles would work in urban areas, but.... Well, let's just say that I've no interest in an autonomous vehicle until somebody tells me how they handle rock crawling and such.

I agree, but think EM will introduce an EV Model in 5 years or less from the official production start. Perhaps EM should have marketed the $6800 ICELIO and a $11,900 EVELIO simultaneously to cover both market demographics. The EV Model may have carried the ICE Model by insuring the ATVM loan and crushing any future three wheeler commuter EV competition, but what do I know. Regardless, it will all work out.
I think you're right -- but I think if they DON'T get it done within 10 years they'll be kaput. My betting is they DO come out with the Eelio within five years of launching the gas powered version. Maybe as few as 3 years.
