I hope that they make an exception, with regards to transport fees, for reservationists if we go down to Shreveport to pick up the vehicle.
I'd like to go down, pick out my options, see the factory, meet some of the workers, maybe have a drink with them after work and then drive my Elio back home. Oh and eat some cajun food. I always look forward to going to LA.

Now, if I pay to travel all the way down, stay for a few days, eat, drink, see the sites and the rest, I'm hoping that EM will at least meet me part way on that transport fees. They have to get it to the local marshalling yard and then to where ever we pick it up. If a 1/3 of us do it, that's 20,000+ tourists for the economy which would go along way in making nice with the locals who have been patient with them getting to production and getting jobs available.

Oh and I'll be driving 700+ miles on the way back home, showing off the Elio -- the best kind of marketing.

Taking delivery of the Elio will be an excuse for an extended ramble on my part. A roomette on the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Longmont, Texas, then Amtrak bus to Shreveport. After picking up our Elio, a drive to a friend's ranch northeast of Austin for a visit (And to show off the Elio!), and then home by whatever route, haven't decided yet! Should be a blast, I love a road trip like this. :p

On break ins... I remember reading something years ago about Russian diesel tank engines, and that it was "normal" to remove about a kilo of shavings from the crankcase at the first oil change.

My concern with picking it up at the factory is the vehicle registration. The Arkansas DFA won't issue a license plate without a VIN. I won't have the VIN until I have the vehicle. I plan on driving to the marshalling center and dragging the Elio home on one of those Uhaul car towing rigs that leave the rear wheels (or wheel, LOL) on the ground.

I'll be picking mine up and depending on the time of year, may just make a family trip out of it!

It won't be any different than any other seller... there will be a paper plate in place of a real license plate. The VIN will clearly be on the vehicle. In Nebraska, you just show up at the DMV, have the person go out and verify the VIN, and then go in and register it. (and don't forget those taxes!) I'm sure it's similar in other states. Your Elio won't be the first car purchased from out of state they have registered.

Ty, do you know of anyone else in the area with a lower SIL than you? I'll be quite a bit further behind you. If you are up for it, we could coordinate a little shin dig for your arrival, I'm going to have to live vicariously through you until I my number comes up. <g>.

the only issue is dealing with your insurance company for a temporarily binder, they normally request a vin number in advance, most states have a period before your required to register, California till recently closing the Steve jobs loophole let you go 6 months with no tags. he would just swap out his car for a new lease every 6 months and never had a license plate.

they'll issue a "paper plate" usually good for 60 days. Geico even covers you for few days before you contact them ( they are sooo easy on line, you can print-out your card in minutes
