As someone all ready posted, I think there may be a problem for the people who have this as there only mode of transportation. How can you get a drivers license for a car, when you only own a motorcycle?

You can have a drivers license and not own a car or truck. As far as Maryland is concerned, who knows? Since I already have the motorcycle endorsement on my Maryland drivers license I will be sure to keep it even if I no longer ride a bike.

I agree with you. I sold my GoldWing about a month ago, because down here in Florida (hell) it gets HOT! And I have no desire to ride when it is so hot my tires are melting and i can't see because the sweat is pouring down my face and getting in my eyes. Which for me takes about 10 minutes.
I would much rather be tooling along in my air conditioned Elio with my ice cooler in the back seat and my jacket on to ward away the snow blowing out the vents because of max a/c.
Or not being able to feel my fingers because of the freezing wind in the winter.
So I will keep my MC endorsement regardless.

I have been collecting information by state as it becomes available so that is why I ask. I have known about Washington and Oregon since January but other states have so successfully buried their information it is difficult to find it. That is why I ask. :) Z

That's great you are doing that Z! I emailed a suggestion to Elio Motors that they do this same thing, but they don't appear to have an interest.

So long as there is no additional cost, why not? I carried a commercial license - once needed for a summer job in high school, but it allowed me to drive state vehicles when I worked at the university during my years in school. It wasn't so much the additional $14, but the hassle of going down to the DMV every year for renewal that caused me to drop it. I kept my motorcycle endorsement for many years - until my wife insisted I wouldn't be riding bikes any more after a number of friends' accidents.

Actually they have a department or team of people who are working on this full time. They simply don't take the time to keep us informed unless they need us to contact a politician. So far I only know of one such request and that was for Missouri. :-) Z

That's good to hear. What I meant is that I would like EM to share that information on a spreadsheet or map on eliomotors.com, similar to what they've done for the helmet laws map. To me, if I live in a state where I need a motorcycle license to drive the Elio, I'd want to know so I can contact my state representatives.

I am just not understanding why you folks are paying so much for insurance.

2 motorcycles @ liability, pedestrian, underinsured and uninsured = $135/yr (total for both).
'03 Mustang @ liability, funeral benefit, key replacement,comprehensive and $1500 IN Customization = $437/yr.
'01 GMC 4WD Safari @ liability, funeral benefit, underinsured and uninsured = $327/yr.

Grand total = $899/yr.

I'm paying $600 a year less than you and insuring twice as many vehicles!
Mass. isn't cheap either and that has much to do with repair cost here..

I consider Massachusetts as the Socialist Republic of Massachusetts. LOL If you want to know why? Massachusetts more or less declared DUIs were not to be penalized with higher rates. In other words the average guy is to pay the same rates as a multiple accident and ticketed and dui clients spread over the entire risks factors. The States rules were so limiting that I could not stand the expense of issuing the policies. Another classic case of Government fixing the problem. Sound familiar? My Guess is that Mass is probably the most expensive State in the union.

I contacted the Idaho Department of Transportation yesterday and got a quick reply. It sounds like Elio will require a MC endorsement & helmet under current laws. However, the response mentioned that they are reviewing Three Wheelers.........and it may change in the updated 2015 Idaho Motorcycle Operators Manual. Good news if they follow through. I can only hope. If there are other future Idaho Elio Owners please contact the IDT. The more public interest in changing the law the better.......and keeps the issue in the forefront. Perhaps Elio's Government Affairs Specialist will do a followup.

The information I have (which is several months old) only under 18 y/os have to wear a helmet. I am under the impression that you are at least 19. LOL :-) Z
