Got my first bike at 16 and have had 7 in my life. I just turned 62 and sold my Suzuki C50T. Probably the best bike I ever owned and it will be my last. I only had one accident in my life (a few near misses) when I rounded a blind turn in Colorado in the 70's and some idiot decided it was a good idea to stop in the middle of the road to ask directions. Bike went down. I went over the trunk and kept going another 20 feet into a ditch. No injuries, but my Yamaha 750 triple was pretty messed up. Most everyone else has already said it. Armor whatever you don't want scraped off your body and ride with 3 rules:
1) You're invisible
2) People are trying to kill you
3) Cagers will not follow the rules of the road

The reason I sold my bike is because I figured I had pressed my luck long enough on motorcycles. I made it to 62 and retirement so now I want to be around with all my parts working to enjoy the rest of my life. Their are too many idiots talking on phones, texting, and all other manner of things except driving. It was getting to the point where it just wasn't fun anymore.

I am always amazed at the large number of people that give up riding often because somebody they know crashed or they just decided it was unsafe.

We experience risks everyday. Recognizing those risks allows us to minimize them. Educating ourselves and getting training further helps to minimize those risks. Sometimes it is appropriate to abandon behavior that is risky but I hope I never decide motorcycling is something I have to abandon.
I live in Florida where it rains daily and when it's not raining it hot enough to make post protective gear a heat stroke hazard. On top of that it's the "land of the retired" the day I 100% decided to sell the bike was the day an old lady "did not see me" (or here my OPEN PIPES) and changed lanes in to me forcing me off the road. I was lucky... But figured not to press my luck any further. When I posted early right did not want to scare the OP with another "almost horror story" so I omitted my own "close call"

I started riding when I was eleven and now I am ,well, more mature . Right now I have four motorcycles and am planning to sell 3 of them and all that cash will be used for the Elio and up grades. Can't wait, where in the hell am I in line,I am having withdrawals and may have to go into rehab at the Elio factory.

When I retired I went to a dealership to look for my first motorcycle. I changed my mind when someone drove off the lot and was creamed by an inattentive motorist right in front of me. Bought a 65 inch big screen TV instead. Been watching "Then Came Bronson." Good show.

Where did you find it? I would love to watch it as I missed the show due to going off to college at the time.

Ok now... my mind has changed.... Harley gave me a kick butt deal

Suggestions on what you would do

---- They are going to include the basic Safety course
---- The Advanced Course
---- Full gear for me
---- a 2014 883 Iron with front mount controls
---- New screamin eagle pipes with Stage 1 tuning
---- Paint maintenance and warranty
---- GAP protection (so that if the bike is totaled the payments are taken care of)
---- Maintenance (minus the 1000 mile maintenance which is 300)
---- all for 247 a month

I know you said not to make payments but MAN this is tempting lol

For what the Harley will cost (I know they're cool) you can buy (4-5) Elio's.
No bugs in the face @ 85 mph, No getting soaked, no grandma/pa looking
right at you, then turning in front of you anyway, etc., etc. stick with your
plan, save the cash @ take your sweety to Hawaii, you won't regret it......
