Without good lateral traction on the back you'll find yourself spinning around on even light curves. With only one tire to grip on the back this might bethe Achile's heel of the Elio in snow and ice. A new snow tire design might be needed.

As long as the wheel covers are easy to remove, should be easy to remove covers, drive over chains or snow treads, then attach the chains and some sort of ski to the back tire. Speed is not an issue driving in heavy snow, so who need wheel covers. Instant snowmobile.

Couple of things to remember tho...
1. Good pair of Polarizing UV protected sunglasses are a must (You can go "snow blind" looking at the salt in the sun)
2. Make darn sure you've washed ALL of the salt off the vehicle when you're done!

I have to admit, I rarely see a pot hole in the middle of the lane. If there is one, it is the width of the lane. The center of the lane is the smoothest part, and yes the slickest. Fronts are for braking. I'm not worried about hitting a pot hole with the rear wheel.

every since reading this and other related post I've paid much more attention to road conditions by looking for times I'd have to worry about the single rear of an Elio .... bottom line, the only times I've seen road conditions that concerned me involved chunks of rubber from blown/separated big rig tires .... pot holes in the middle of the lane simply haven't been an issue .... I know by writing this I'm dooming myself to have problems but from what I've seen so far, I don't expect it to be a major issue

Snows are built purposely narrower than A/S and summers, and I know they aren't going to re-invent the wheel. Relative to a comment way back about the rear wheel running in an unclean area of the lane, I have seen lots of tire punctures. A huge majority of them are rear tires. The nail, screw or other lies flat on the road and when your front tire runs it over it kicks up and hits the rear just so. I'm expecting this to be a non-issue on an Elio.
