As a person who has worked with color a lot, albeit in an unrelated field, I might be able to shed a little light on this subject. It is safe to say the colors have been selected but the exact hue and tone have not. Also I believe the P4 is routinely cleaned with a special finish to keep its shiny appearance. Considering what it has gone through since its release last January I can honestly say I am impressed with whatever it is they use. EM cannot lock in the exact "dye lot" at this time because they have nothing to apply it to. My guess is once production is close they will be able to say to the manufacturer this is what we want; can you provide it in the quantities and at the price we need. Since that point is a good 9 months away, it is way too early to be worrying about what really is the small stuff.

When I read questions about whether the silver will be metallic I wonder if the price of paint has changed dramatically enough in my lifetime to make that a reasonable question. In the past, metallic paints were very expensive so unless this has changed, the silver is going to be silver, not gray, but it is not going to be metallic. I also suspect the other colors are going to be at levels of glossiness currently in vogue. Of course this is strictly speculation but it makes sense to me. I have seen the rare flat black vehicle and thought it very ugly. Most cars and trucks are what I would call a cross between gloss and semi-gloss. Then are those that have a high gloss and others the flat or matte.

Of course since I am totally biased and not the least bit humble about my opinions, I totally trust EM to know what they are doing. :) Z
I am very happy you have pointed out that EM still has to lock in the exact color. I would not have expected this. This shows all the many things EM is having to deal with. The delays are not because of problems or mismanagement, but simply because of so much to do. Delays to not worry me.

It sorta combines a coupla topics from this thread, color & lights (& visibility): Lumilor paint...google it...it's paint that glows when provided with an electrical charge! Not sure how much it's gonna cost, but I want it!!! :D

There are some great pictures of it having been used on motorcycles. I have to admit, it is an incredibly beautiful treatment. There are also links to the website so you can see and read about it. Awesome stuff even to a little old lady. Of course this little old lady does not remember where they are.  :-) Z

I like the yellow myself.

Yes I am really surprised yellow wasnt in the mix. Let the 1st yr roll off the production line - they will either drop the least requested color and replace it with the most requested color or just add a req color. I really likes yellow as well - can be both highly visible and sporty.

I never liked how the color selection was determined. It wasn't a tally of the most votes for any particular but was a weekly choice between two colors with a bracketed process with winners moving on to the following week. Oh well, my choice survived so I guess I can't be too unhappy. Guess you could say that the Creamsicle is in between red and yellow. That's as close as you can get right now.

That was not actually a color selection process but a game to pass the time. The seven colors had already been chosen and EM added yellow back in for that game as they needed 8 colors to make an even number.

Yellow is out as overall very few yellow cars are sold and among the group of less popular colors it is the most expensive so it loses out.
