Any time I worked on things I always took my jewelry off and tossed it in the tool box; I got a watch caught and ripped off once and that was enough warning.
As for married; 4 times (yes, divorced 3; been married for 33 years, just not to the same person) with #2 we talked about tats and never did it and I'm so glad we didn't. That was one person that taught me how to hate someone; we were married for 13 years, and in the 22 years since I thank my lucky stars that we never did the tats. With 2 of the others we never had rings, just never could agree on anything; now with #4 simple gold band for both of us. It's never been an issue getting in the way, getting caught on anything or feeling out of place. You can tell I wear it the majority of the time, it's got dings and scratches all over it. If I'm working in a tight area, I will take it off and put it in my pocket.
I have other tats, all of which can and are usually covered. Ink on other people only bothers me with it's done in stupid places (face, neck, hands, (especially the palm of the hand) and when it's done so poorly you wonder how toasted the ink artist was).
As for being married 23 years, good for you; but always remember everything is subject to change; no one knows the future in detail.

Well, Someone does, and I'm relying on prayer and our faith in Him to get us to the end.
I'm actually not too concerned with the ring getting caught on things; I just don't like wearing rings.

Just on top. Tattoo Guy said there was no point in going all the way around as the front of palms/fingers have a tendency to reject ink in time (ie, it wouldn't last). Hurt like a son of a bitch (I've another tat that didn't hurt at all but that ring... Oh, my!). Cost was pretty cheap. Something like $50 10+ years ago.
