I was smitten the first time I saw the Elio on the web (haven't yet in person) and jumped "All In" and have my Certificate #5486! Elio has been confident that all states will recognize this little wonder as a motorcycle for registration purposes, but a friend brought this to my attention from our state DMV:

"Three-Wheeled Vehicles: that have or are designed to have a driver’s seat that is completely enclosed and a motor which is not in the enclosed area are not motorcycles under Connecticut law, and may not be registered as motorcycles." [http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=810&q=430480]

Will they recognize it as a car? Will we be able to enjoy those anticipated inspiring trips along CT's highways and byways? Guess we just have to wait and see :)

Rich, welcome to the forum where you will find the answers to nearly any question you can think of and some you never imagined. Glad to know that you are as excited about the Elio as we are. Welcome and we look forward to your comments and opinions.

You can be assured it is one of the issues being handled by the Gov't Affairs group at Elio. CT has one of the strictest statements of the many I have read and if I remember correctly it even includes speed limits and road use restrictions that are totally ridiculous. Fortunately we have a year before the change is needed because it will likely take that long to get it done. In the meantime, enjoy this exciting journey and adventure to Elio production and ownership. Don't be surprised if at some point EM contacts you to contact your government reps to let them know what is needed. They have done this with one state already. Many states are simply quietly changing their laws. It will happen. It is simply a matter of when. Meet you next year in our 2015 Elios! :-) Z

Hey at least there isn't a requirement to have a person walk in front of it carrying a flag to warn horsemen of your approach. One of the wonderful things about life is nothing but change is constant. Some just take longer.

I know several people who have tried to register 3 wheelers in CT. If the vehicle is a sit in type, not t trike, and not on some list, its a no go. Fully enclosed, 2 or 3 wheels? DMV told me that it is simply illegal. In spite of a highly favorable display in he state.

What would they do if it was registered in a surrounding state and it was driven over the state line into CT?

I know that in South Dakota 4-wheelers and even gasoline powered golf carts can be given a motorcycle tag and driven on the highways .... bring that same rig with an SD tag to North Carolina, where those vehicles cannot be licensed for highway use, and you will likely get a ticket
