I have a feeling you'll get pulled in an HOV lane and the ticket will be upheld. The Elio is being treated like a car for the most part and laws are changing to make it so. It will take several hundred HOV tickets accross the US to sort this out but I think this HOV ticket will be handed out the most behind speeding.

I asked,
Earlier this year I had a chance to talk to a couple of Portland Police Officer as they walked down my driveway, ( but that is another story), I talked to them about my new Elio coming in 2015...

When they saw the picture of mine, one of the first things they said was... " Hey Look it can drive in the HOV ".... I thought that was odd, that, would be their first words about the Elio...

I asked why can it be?, and they stated that it was because the Elio is " designed " to be only a one person driver, and with the three wheels... made it a motorcycle...so no problems at all in the HOV...

The DMV Laws have already changed here in Oregon, about the Autocycle... so no helmet or motorcycle license is needed... unclear about other States... Elio Motors did state that they believed by the time of production, all State will be covered...

The Officers also said they would talk to the Motorcycle division about fleet sales of Elio's, they liked the whole idea of the Elio.. $6800 price, 84 mpg, really liked the 5 star roll cage rating, and mostly getting out of the weather...

So Police Elio's are going to be on the streets... I am guessing that the fleet sales for City, State, Government, and Police will be really big with Elio Motors...

NO! you can't blame me, for the first time you get pulled over by a Police Officer in a Elio...

Even with that said... I still believe I am going to get pulled over a lot... until the Police have their own!, Elio's to grin about...

Proud to Be... an Elio owner ..#2225 see ya on the road... "give me a wave"

After my purchase of my three wheel Scoot Coupe, I had to get used to at least adding 30 minutes to every outing because people would want to take pictures or ask questions about it. I have had many police come up to me and want to know all about it and check it out. The longest time is on the weekends at the mall or Wallmart parking lots. I can just imagine how long the picture taking and question sessions will take with my new Elio! But hey, it will be my pleasure to spread the news and be a ambassador for such a GREAT product!

I have been pulled over twice (in two different cars) because the officer wanted to look at the cool car I was driving. Both told me up front so I did not mind. BSing cars with a cop on the side of the road is actually kind of fun when you are not trying to get out of a ticket! : )
I have been cut slack more times then the other way around by officers. Even when I was a young hooligan!
Had one I would thank if I knew his name. Stopped me from getting any deeper involved with some serious (really serious) trouble by talking to me for ten minutes instead of being a hard a$$.

Got stopped once for completely blowing thru a red light, towing my racecar, no trailer brakes, 3am, bfe Florida, US19.
FHP officer forgot the infraction because he spent 20 minutes chewing the fat, no pun intended, over my racecar, even climbed in!
That was before Dashcams, Drat, would have made great YouTube footage. :D

interesting/surprising article about the vehicles that get the most tickets taken from this link : http://www.cbsnews.com/news/speed-traps-americas-10-most-ticketed-cars/ .... hope Elio never makes this list ... ;)

"It's not about horsepower," said Des Toups, managing editor of Insurance.com. "The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R rank well below average for tickets even though they can easily double the highest speed limits. But those cars are also costly, so their buyers tend to be older and take fewer risks."

Overall, about one in five drivers reported a moving violation in the past three years. Remarkably, though, fully one-third of Subaru WRX owners had been ticketed.

Following are the rest of the cars on the top 10 most-ticketed list, along with the percentage of drivers looking for insurance who reported at least one moving violation in the past year.

2. Pontiac GTO (32.7 percent)
3. Scion FR-S (32.6 percent)
4. Toyota Supra (30.8 percent)
5. Subaru Tribeca (29.7 percent)
6. Volkswagen Rabbit (29.6 percent)
7. Mercury Topaz (28.8 percent)
8. Scion tC (28.8 percent)
9. Toyota FJ Cruiser (28.4 percent)
10. Mazda2 (28.1 percent)

I've been stopped because I was in a pickup the same color as one they were looking for. The patrolman asked what I was doing out early in the morning. I told him I was just going home so he let me go. Makes you wonder. So yes they can and will stop you for any reason.

That happened here at the farm. Sheriff pull into my drive while I was out back with the chickens. He told me my truck looked like one that's been spotted at a few house break-ins. He ordered me to keep my garage door closed. I try to be more compliant now.

From the article "vehicles favored by younger drivers." Looking around on here it seems their are not that many of us who fit into this description.......

Talking about behaving , remember the Austin Powers movie "Golden Member" they had similiar cars like the elio but at the very end they had a tail that resembled a sperm cell( or is it my imagination). Watch the movie , it's always woth a laugh., Oh ! Behave.

Untrue. It's a federal highway (I-10) and, according to the federal government, a motorcycle is defined as a vehicle with less than four wheels. Texas, Harris County and Houston have no say in it.

I'm curious, can 2 seater, 4 wheel sport cars use the HOV lane? :) Z
Not per federal law...even if it gets a bazillion miles per gallon. It's kind of funny that a Toyota Prius that gets 50 mpg with 5 passengers onboard will get ticketed, while my Suzuki C109RT that gets exactly 40 with me riding alone, will not. Why? Because "it's what plants crave!"
