This is futurism at it's best. I was just thinking, wouldn't the Elio make an awesome and very inexpensive autonomous taxi?
That is, if you call for a ride for one passenger, they send an Elio. ( no driver ).. There is high-tech research going on all over the place, which includes such things;

Apple Hiring Automotive Experts

An anonymous reader writes: A report at the Financial Times (paywalled) says Apple is on an aggressive hiring push to pick up automotive experts. Recent rumors suggest Apple is putting together a transportation research lab, and nobody outside the company is quite sure why. It's unlikely they's want to build an entire car themselves, but quite possible they see a big space for Apple technology within motor vehicles, much as Google seems to. They already have CarPlay, and it will doubtless grow, but we still don't have anything approaching a dominant platform for car software. Whatever they're working on, it looks like the competition for more robust computer technology in cars is heating up.

I well remember the first time I ever pushed a button and put a truck on cruise control .... it was a panic moment when I felt I had no control whatsoever over the truck .... if it ain't on rails, I just can't see me getting into a vehicle with no driver

Ah... you say that now.
There will come a day. Maybe not with you or me, but soon this will be as common as cruise control.

We currently have 5 passenger commuter vehicles with one occupant 80% of the time. The future holds the sighting of self driving 2 passenger commuter vehicles completely empty on the way to way to pick up 1 or 2 passengers.

Maybe Apple should Partner with Elio Motors and just build the Apple technology into an electric Elio platform.

I use to think of my Cruise Control as total waste of time. Now I use it all the time, sometimes just to limit my tendency to speed.
The rule is, if it is useful and convenient, it will be used.

That's exactly how I use mine. If it weren't for cruise, I'd have MANY points on my record. I tend to creep up in speed to either keep with traffic or close the gap between me and the car in front of me.
Now, I set the cruise on 6 MPH over the speed limit and never have to worry about speeding. Makes me laugh when cars go by me only to jam on their brakes when they see a policeman.
Funny, some people in my car, namely my wife, still say "look out, there's a cop ahead."
If you're not breaking the law, -or at least only breaking it by 6 MPH - who cares if there are cops ahead?

im convinced that one day, after autonomous vehicles are common and accepted, that thousands will die and/or be maimed due to a bad software patch.... automatically installed for your convenience and safety, of course... I won't have one as long as I can still drive, and being in my very early 30's still, that's going to be a loooooooong time. Besides, I just don't like the controll factor... No computer is going to tell me what the speed limit is, or when its safe to cut across 3 lanes of traffic....
