As someone who grew up in Minnesota and lives in ND I can tell you the wind rarely ever stops. I once went sky diving and the instructor wouldn't take us unless the wind was below 12 mph. It took over a month for us to finally be able to jump.

GE is proposing lattice towers instead monotubes. Monotubes can't be constructed on site, and are limited in diameter (and therefore in height) by road regulations. Lattice towers have neither limitation and can be much taller, where the wind is both stronger and more steady. NREL recently released a map of greatly increased land area suitable for taller wind turbines.

And USA, just now installing its first, is way behind Europe in wind turbines on the Continental shelf.

What a trade off. Air pollution for eye pollution.

I'll be the first to admit when it comes to all the specs, the ins and outs, and such that I know next to nothing or even less .... with energy from wind, the thing that make sense to me is you can't make power when the wind doesn't blow .... with solar, you can't make power when the sun doesn't shine .... saying that doesn't mean I'm against them .... earlier this year took out a solar heating and hot water system that was installed in our home back when Jimmy Carter was president .... it served us well but I have no interest in ever installing another .... for folks who are willing to pay for it, I have no problem with them doing so .... we got a huge tax credit on our former solar system .... without it we would not have installed it .... that was good for us but took money out of other people's pocket
I agree and know little about the future energy needs and or the technology. I do know the tax incentives help develop and improve technology, encourage people to buy products, and expand the economy. As far as those incentives taking money out of other peoples pockets........politicians would simply spend it someplace else having less benefit and or end up in the pockets of big oil or big something else.

My Dad installed a small solar heating package, which wasn't that impressive at the time, but that technology has changed dramatically over time to where a few large scale commercial buildings are designed to be highly efficient utilizing renewable technolgies which to me is impressive energy dollars saved over the lifetime of the project. Then again, I am easily impressed by many things to include the Elio.

I lived in South Dakota 62 years and recall the wind blowing 60 out of the 62. lol

Might help drowned out the sucking sound.
[Old joke when I lived/grew up in Colorado: The wind doesn't blow in Colorado...Kansas sucks.]:D
The Arizona joke, why doesn't California fall into the ocean? Arizona sucks. But Ca is bigger than Az, why doesn't Arizona fall in with it? New Mexico sucks harder, and Texas even harder than that! (apologies inferred)

I would add, that is all justified on the weather, although I don't know what NM weather is like. I do however have bad-bad memories of TX weather.

This makes perfect sense to Air Force personnel stationed in AZ, since we went through boot camp and for me also tech school in TX.

where does the power come from when the wind doesn't blow ....

"The average capacity factor — that is the output of an electricity-producing asset over a period of time divided by its maximum theoretical power output — was about 32 percent for wind power in the US over the past 3 years (Source). The Hawi Renewable Development Wind Farm is a little bit better than that at 45 percent, but for the 55 percent of the time that it isn’t producing power, backup is required. Often, intermittent renewable power power supplies are backed up by dirty and inefficient power.

The Waimea Generating Station is located only a few hundred yards from my house. It is owned and operated by Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc. (HELCO). The plant consists of three 2.5 MW diesel engine generators that are fired on Number 2 fuel oil with a maximum sulfur content of 0.5 percent by weight. Every time I notice that its calm on my morning run, I can always find the smoke rising from these generators. They come on when the wind turbines aren’t spinning." (source : from this link )

the bottom line is when the wind doesn't blow, wind turbines do not product power .... in addition, sufficient wind may or may not correspond with peak demand .... we spend the summer in South Dakota where we can see the windmills in a massive wind farm in Minnesota .... when the wind doesn't blow the missing power has to come from somewhere .... as the author says above, when the wind doesn't blow the diesel generators fire up
I will respectfully suggest you quit parroting ignorance and Google INNERGEX and learn how this properly integrated Solar, wind, conventional and run of the river company does produce 100% clean renewable energy. Without a cent of gov money, or tax break. Public company, private financing, paying@6% on common stock. I too had a fit when they went into solar, thinking my investment was doomed. This is a very old, smart company. To help you understand, water is used as a storage battery. When the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing, power is produced from water. When wind and/or solar are online, water rights are saved until needed. Peak power needs are always met. Last year's production was 103% of projected supply. Most of the power is consumed in New York. Some in the West and now even some is produced in the land of ignorance and corruption where so many bribes are required to get permits to produce clean energy and overcome coal/oil money.
