Great video! I have seen portions of this video before but never the entire engine start and launch sequence in slow motion. The detailed narration is really quite interesting as though I have heard most of this before it was great to be able to see it happening as it is being explained.

I enjoy my life as a nerd as well! Nerds really get to do and see a lot of interesting things.

Wow... One of my regrets is never having seen a Saturn launch; utterly brutal machine!:eek: In a Science Friday interview with Gene Kranz, a caller asked Kranz if it was true that we no longer had a complete set of plans for the Saturn 5. He allowed that that was true, and then added that it really made no difference, as we no longer had the manufacturing base to build one anyway... :(

......"as we no longer had the manufacturing base to build one anyway... ".........
Sad commentary on our nation.

Fear not! Boeing's on it! It's not my division (I'm BDS - Boeing Defense Systems), but we do get tidbits of info in an intra-company magazine called 'Frontiers'.

Pretty much EVERYTHING we build now is a collaboration between multiple countries, including the F-15E I currently work on. Gone are the days of "Made 100% in the USA"...But Elio is attempting to bring it back. GO ELIO!!

Evidently, there was a "nuance" to the no plans thing: according to this article, the "plans" are there, but not the "as built" plans. Great article; Pistonboy, you really sent me down the rabbit hole this morning! Thanks!

NSTG8TR, I remember you telling about a 3D printer that could print titanium parts with the threads already in the holes. was that an "electron beam melting" device like they describe in this article?

Yes, EBM. The unit we had was an Arcam, but that was about 6 years ago and I'm not sure which metal 3D printer they're using now. I did get a personal tour from a guy I work closely with on some of the 3D printed 'gadgets' I've had made [originally designed on my laptop, and prototyped on my Robo 3D R1 printer...which is getting some 'cool' upgrades added this afternoon!]. He did show me some metal components they had made in a different building [security clearance required] that they're in the process of getting certified for use on production aircraft...unheard of on military aircraft just a year ago. Not sure of the unit they're using, but he did say that they got rid of the Arcam because the build volume was too small. The components I got my hands on, built on the new system [rejects for one reason or another] looked and felt amazing! ABSOLUTELY the future of prototyping, and quite conceivably, manufacturing. Anyone with teenage kids right now might want to mention this to them [A CAD degree will keep you employed in the foreseeable future, and Mechanical Engineering would be the icing on the cake ;)].

Link to the unit I got to play with back in the day:
