You don't know what the standard fenders cost. They are standard, not an option.

"Elio Motors: Hello, the new fenders will come with all Elios, and if you buy the retro fenders when you order your Elio, you'll have both sets!"

That's my plan. Have both sets. The open ones for Winter, to help eliminate ice and snow packing up.

I've always wanted a plow like that on my car, regardless of what I was driving.

It's been my experience that Deer strikes are the only ones you really gotta worry about (and other similarly sized animals--cows in range country, Moose in certain parts of Washington and Alaska, etc). And when it comes to deer, most of my experience has been clipping the animal with the headlights, rather than a head-on collision.

With that in mind, I think clipping an animal with one of the fenders will not cause too much damage. Maybe replace the fender and get the alignment checked just-in-case, but I doubt anything short of a Moose would cause serious damage to the front end. And I think a head-on collision would be about the same as any other car. (Does the Elio have a bumper? Or is it just the frame?).
The worst animal to hit where I've driven is northern Michigan when the Elk are moving. An 80 pound deer can cause thousands in damage. An elk, much like a moose, can kill you.

I saw many deer during daily commutes, but they were always below eye level. When I saw an elk, it was definitely well above eye level. That was the first time I realized how large an elk was.

I shot my first elk as a teenager at about 50 yards away. I almost didn't take the shot because I thought he was a horse. Then I noticed his antlers :) Yes they are much larger than a deer. Moose are even larger.

How about open range, there are some very big, very solid bull's out there.

Had to do some really hard braking a few mornings ago on my way to work to avoid the 12 foot gator that decided to take a stroll across the highway. Would rather never find out how much damage would ensue in my Chevy Cobalt or my Elio hitting one of those critters.
I can't contain myself!! I am sincerely glad that neither you nor you vehicle were damaged by the close encounter with the alligator. On a light note, would you believe that I ran under an 18' mastodon on my way to work this morning. I am thinking that a taller car would have been destroyed.;):D

I've lived in Oklahoma most of my life and we do have an abundance of deer. Luckily I have never hit a deer with my car, but have had a few close calls. My mom hit one a few years back in her Camry and it did a significant amount of damage. I have hit smaller animals like rabbits, raccoons, possums and armadillos. Most of the time they do very little damage, but it's still an unnerving experience. I have learned a couple of things, NEVER swerve to avoid an animal in the road, statistics show that those who do usually loose control of the vehicle and end up risking human lives. Also don't try to straddle even a small animal (except for box turtles, which are also abundant in Oklahoma) , it will still hit the under carriage of your car. Anyway, I guess what I'm getting at is animal strikes are going to happen and damage will occur (unless you drive a tank) don't expect the Elio to be any different. The best way to avoid things like this is to not drive distracted or tired, stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

We were taught in driving school that if any obstacle was in your lane brake hard and hit it. you will hit it at a lesser speed; you won't increase your liability by swerving and hitting something else, your car won't roll, and You will survive if your seatbelt is buckled. The straight skid marks will tell the tale.

I was thinking: a "Rocket Silver" elio kitted out to look like the Delorean time machine would actually look pretty cool!

It really would. Single exhaust duct over the rear hatch, LED lighted exterior wire/cable guides. Retro fenders with the Delorean style alloy wheels. Dash mounted tablet with replica time circuit controls, flux capacitor in the back seat (removable and stowed in the trunk to carry actual passengers).

Count me all in for that one! Deliorean?
