Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, and Smart already sell EVs under $30k. The following prices do NOT include any federal or state tax credits which, if you qualify, can drop the price by many thousand.
  • 2017 Smart Electric $23,800
  • 2018 Ford Focus Electric $29,190
  • 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric $29,500
  • 2018 Nissan Leaf $29,900.
Or are these not "major" enough?

Well Rob, only the 2017 Smart has a chance to be under $30K after you add all the other dealer prep and title costs.
To be sure, the costs for EV's might drop for a while, if nothing else, to put competition out of business. Comes down to how deep the manufacturers pockets are. You also can't count on tax credits being available. The other thing is the cost of insurance as that adds to the cost of operation too. Oh, and how much will a home charger cost, installed (I know you and I could install them but the typical person can't.) If the Elio were made electric and got at least 150 miles per charge, I would be interested for about $15K.

Irrelevant to the point. That point being that the major auto manufacturers are already selling EVs for under $30k. Various programs, incentives, and rebates can take that price to below $20k.

VW has committed to electrifying it's fleet completely, and to stop building combustion engines. GM is going whole-hog into EVs. Tesla is just getting started on mass manufacturing. Overseas companies seeling vehicles in Europe and China are pumping out millions of plug-in vehicles. Q1 2018 saw over 300,000 deliveries worldwide. 132,000 of those in China alone. EV sales are growing at incredible rates.

You assertion that "... manufacturers would drop the electric car lines immediately" is pure delusional fantasy. Tesla mainstreamed EVs, there's no doubt about that. But the market will continue to grow and flourish, with or without them.

This doesn't mean that ICE vehicles won't continue to be built and sold. Barring some true paradigm shift or revolutionary tech/price breakthrough, there will continue to be a need and market for ICE vehicles.

I agree with the above point. I'll be pushing up daisies before ICE is overtaken by electric (and please don't tell me that will happen in a few years!). I prefer ICE vehicles which is why I want the Elio and not an electric autocycle. The only problem I have with the EV is the government using OPM (mine included) to subsidize their purchase. If the vehicle is so worthwhile, people shouldn't have to be given money to help them buy one. I sure hope that Paul and crew gets the operation running relatively soon given the recent announcements. It's good to see forward motion again.

Previous EV threads on this topic exist. What can be drawn from reading those past threads is that there is an underlying fear of change or just batteries in the US. Not clear which one it is though. The Elio's price point is what will make it make sense for the long distance commuters. While Im waiting on the 200 mile leaf next year, Im not holding my breath that it will be under 30k. Charge times are another issue if you don't have a fast charger at home or out on the road. When folks get home with a near depleted battery, a level 1 charge looks like 8 to 50 hours depending on the model. So before we post cost's of EV's we need to consider some options, specifically battery size options and charger options, both of which add cost to the vehicle.

The US is a big place. Many of us have long commutes or long pleasure travel distances. China has long commute times..... but generally short commutes. That works better for EV's. California has more EV friendly weather than Chicago. Lots of issues to consider.

For me, Elio and Its ICE motor at lest than $10K makes sense for longer commutes. Thats what the whole N+ idea is about.

I have little doubt my next car will be an EV in the next two years. It most likely wont be from an American manufacture. That's our own darn fault. Fingers are crossed that Ill also have an Elio as well.

Arcimoto has laid out their factory and plans on selling to customers next year. Two-person vehicle, laid out much like Elio. Fully electric with up to 120 mile range. 80 mph. That's further and faster than 99% of vehicle trips require. $12 k. (link)

Why must electric vehicles be sold on my dime? We are free market not socialist! I will not by electric because of all of my money that without my consent went into other peoples pockets! If you want an electric then YOU pay for it. There are other reasons for me but this is the main reason I hope they fail. Elon Musk... don't get me started.

I assume you are upset about the window, HVAC and water heater companies selling products on your dime. Then there's the farmers.....
