None of the fully autonomous vehicles will be fully functional until the Department of Transportation issues a complete set of requirements.
For instance, communication between vehicles requires standards that don't exist yet. Communications between vehicles and city traffic systems, etc. have the same issues. Will the vehicles pull over and stop for emergency traffic? Those kinds of question must be answered.

So the real question is: Is $35 billion enough for Hyundai or is this just to get started?

Advancements in AI will help resolve these issues in the next 10 years...

Personally..... I’m glad that I have lived in a time period where I actually drove my vehicle instead of being just a passenger to a computer. Oh well.... times are changing.
If you want to blame the reason why investors are not giving us what we need, it's because all of that money is being thrown at what we want (EV's and autonomous). I can tell you that in manufacturing, those two are the buzzwords and where people are directing their attention. maybe they will change their mind and go with ICE powered 3 wheelers instead.

We just need one investor who realizes that $30k - $200k electric cars aren't affordable to everyone and that someone could make cheap, less environmentally (yet still legal) vehicles and carve themselves a niche...

But niche products get niche investment. Elio needs big time investment not the small ones.

And thus, the crux of the problem! What we need is a Bill Gates type who wants to help the poor in this country by helping bring inexpensive, save, efficient transportation to them!
