Tesla needn't be furious with New Jersey anymore, a new bill has passed lifting a ban on direct-to-customer sales in the state. After Governor Chris Christie assisted the Motor Vehicle Commission in putting the kibosh on its electric cars over a month ago, NJ.comreports that a review committee has done something about the decades-old law that allowed them to do so. In a unanimous vote, the state's Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee passed a bill that not only gives Tesla the right to resume sales in its two existing New Jersey showrooms, but also allow it to open two more. It's a big win for electric car makers in general, as it allows any company that sells zero-emission vehicles directly to customers to open up to four stores in the Garden State. It effectively puts the 1970 law that requires cars to be sold through dealerships on notice, but there were also calls for the state to better protect the dealer "status quo." The FTC has already said suchamendments hurt competition, but has no real power to enact change. It must rely on lawmakers, like those in New Jersey, to draw their own conclusions and restore the sales rights Tesla believes it deserves.

My question is, does the governor now have to sign off on this or is it a done deal? :-) Z

Short answer is Governor must sign off on the passed bill. If Christie veto's the bill...........
http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/legislativepub/glossary.asp :)
ABSOLUTE VETO The Governor's rejection of a proposed law passed by the Legislature. A bill vetoed in this manner cannot become law unless the Legislature overrides the veto by a vote of at least two-thirds of the members of each house. (27 votes in the Senate; 54 votes in the General Assembly)

I looks like it isn't quite there yet. This was a committee vote. The last sentence in the article says:

The bill will need to pass a few more of New Jersey's legislative processes to become law, but things are looking up for Tesla.

Let's hope the rest of the committees/processes are as intelligent as this one was. :-) Z

With Chrisites other political problems still festering he may not be inclined to further anger Tesla................. :)

Two states that I could not do business with was New Jersey and the socialist republic of Massachusetts. Way to liberal and socialistic and anti free enterprise. All others I could.

To those who want on line sales. you go to your local elio showroom, the salesperson gives you the presentation, takes you on test drive, runs the numbers and you go home to think about it. you decide to order on line and eliminate the sales commission or bonus.
You order you elio..you get it and the salesman who helped you gets his commission, for doing his or her job. Might not be 100% but it will be fair..He logged you in, you are his customer.
I used to put a green sticker behind the mirror to tell the service department who my customers were. They got to go to the head of the line in service and if a part was needed, we overnighted it so they were on their way the next day. You bought it from another dealer after I took you on that drive and ran the numbers, you waited 2-3 for your part. Remember that.
