Easy fix, don't buy GM products.
Or any other current automaker's products. They all have computer control with proprietary, copyrighted, usually encrypted software. None of it is public domain or even permissively licensed. You have no legal right to modify the car you bought!

Elio has already said they are buying the computer and software from a proprietary company. It's software is proprietary, copyrighted, and likely encrypted.

The only way to get legal access to Elio's code or any other car's code is to get an exemption from the stupid DMCA.

It's called the Right to Repair (<- Link). Join the fight!

You might also consider joining the EFF - Electronic Frontier Foundation (<- Link). They have been fighting for us to own the things we buy for decades. If you have iTunes or a Kindle, you don't own the music and books you bought.

100% On-board Diagnostics For Owner and how to fix it.
That would all most guarantee the lead in it's market.

As citizens, we all need to go after our "so called" representatives in Washington and have them specifically exempt software used in motor vehicles from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Lacking that we need to rip all of the computer garbage out of our cars and go back to naturally aspirated ICE. That includes O2 sensors.

Cost my mechanic over 12K last year to get up dates. He said this is the last year. Other mechanic only has up to 2007. All they have to do is up price the software and that's it. Time to find a late model 60s car where you can stand between the motor and the inside wheel well and change the plugs without disconnecting the motor mounts.

Sense I was 16 years old I was a GM owner. Latter every member of our family drove GM. For 20 years never even went to the dealer to buy a new car just called them every two years and told them what we wanted. . I am proud to say that we are now a 100% Ford family and will never own another GM product.
They start that and the market place already offers EMC.s that totally replace the factory one that will be come and option for more than just custom builders. We have been doing that on motorcycles form years.

OEM software is hardly unbreakable. People will still continue to modify cars including the ones with encrypted anything. People are smart not just the people who work for oem's and they can bypass anything.

You're missing the point: The DMCA makes it illegal for you to decrypt and modify the software in the car you bought.

Meaning you don't own the car you bought, you are just renting it from the automaker. Also means that all those aftermarket programs like Cobb Accessport, PowerChips, HyperTech and others are one DMCA takedown request from going out of business unless they have approval of (and likely pay lots of money to) the automakers. If they don't have approval, they are committing gross commercial copyright infringement according to the makers and the DMCA.
