Yeah. Caterpillar and John Deere are already deep into this. I have JD 8.1 liter generator engines on the boat I work on, and we can do NOTHING with control issues. We can't even have/use diagnostic software for these pains in the ass, you have to get a JD tech out to the boat with the diagnostic software. One guy I had out said there was a lawsuit in federal court over this... start/rant Off the topic a bit, but how about this little bit of price gouging? We had the HP fuel pump fail on one of these recently. The complete generator set sells for around $25,000, but the fuel pump sells for $4,000!?! GRRRR. end/rant

On this we agree don't buy the stuff . Plenty of older engines that can be rebuilt.

I think, if the OEMs want to "own" the computer, they should be required to 100% warranty and maintain it, and keep the software updated including road map info.

I think Elio's ECU will be more like a motorcycle OBII, on the base model. (piggy back future options for turbo/exhaust,intake mods etc.)
Skyzmatic Internet Connectivity is another thing that might be closer to GM type though.

My little beast got rear-ended by a lady who admitted to being under the influence of three percodans.
She had a shitshu jumping around in the car and was on the phone at the time of impact.
I'm rebuilding it.
