where we are camped in Estelline. SD today, one of my wife's long time friends and her husband came by for a visit .... they were driving a street rod on which he did all the mechanical work (had someone else do the paint, interior and convertible top) .... the body stared out as a 2 door 1929 Ford .... the motor a 1961 GM aluminum 215, which was bored out and completely rebuilt .... everything else was custom made for the vehicle .... the fellow worked on it over several South Dakota several winters .... he drives it in local parades and for joy rides with is wife

it has an automatic transmission .... I didn't ask for any details about it .... I found the exhaust manifold/headers/pipes to be interesting .... he had them custom made at a motorcycle shop out of pipe that is treated so it will not discolor from heat .... I didn't know anything like that existed

One of the other things that helps to avoid chrome motorcycle exhaust pipes from discoloring, is they have a pipe within a pipe. The inner pipe experiences the intense heat of the exhaust while the outer chromed pipe is much cooler.

no personal experience with it but that is something I've heard of .... he said that when he went to the shop to have them made he was expecting to get chrome .... he said that when the owner of the shop found out what they were going to be used for, he recommended against chrome .... that was when he recommended the coated ones .... they aren't shiny like chrome but he said that based on their performance so far, he doesn't expect to have to replace them

I bet the header is ceramic or Jet-Hot coated. The header I am looking at for my Miata is ceramic coated too. Helps keep heat out of the engine bay, make a little more power, and look prettier over time :) For a hot rod I probably would have gone with stainless steel and header wrap. That looks a lot more aggressive to me.

The method Pistonboy mentioned of having an outer chrome cover over the real pipe is how my Harley came from the factory.
