Just saw this today. After reading it I must've had the wrong impression on the 25 E-series test vehicles being in production already. Sounds like they're just getting ready to start production. Oh well, it's progress!

Startup vehicle manufacturer staffs experienced team to assemble E-Series vehicles for critical safety, manufacturability and durability testing

10:31 ET from Elio Motors

PHOENIX, April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Elio Motors, Inc. (OTCQX: ELIO), the startup vehicle manufacturer planning to launch a three-wheeled vehicle that will get up to 84 MPG with a targeted base price of $6,800, today announced it has established a Pilot Operations Center in Livonia, Mich., for the purpose of assembling its E-Series vehicles. The E-Series vehicles will be used to conduct safety, system-performance, manufacturability and durability tests.

In January at the North American International Auto Show, CEO Paul Elio announced that Elio Motors and its supplier partners had started the E-Series development process by determining the specific parts and build sequence for the test vehicles. With that phase of development complete, the company is gearing up for the E-Series assembly.

Paul Elio, founder and CEO of Elio Motors, with the P5 prototype of the Elio, a three-wheeled vehicle that will get up to 84 MPG with a targeted base price of $6,800. The company today announced it has established a Pilot Operations Center in Livonia, Mich., for the purpose of assembling its E-Series vehicles, which will be used to conduct safety, system-performance, manufacturability and durability tests prior to commercial production of the vehicle.
"Beginning the E-Series assembly is another important milestone in our journey toward production, as these test vehicles will allow our engineering and supplier teams to evaluate and validate our design," Elio said. "Commencement of the build will be another tangible sign of the progress we continue to make every day in our unrelenting quest to get this vehicle to market."

The E-Series vehicles will be hand crafted at the Pilot Operations Center by a seasoned, eight-person build team. The first E-Series vehicle will be used to calibrate and test the Anti-Lock Braking System supplied by Continental Automotive. As additional E-Series vehicles are completed, they will be used for a variety of aerodynamic, safety and durability testing. The build team currently is studying the E-Series vehicles' systems and processes, prior to build launch.

According to Gino Raffin, vice president of Manufacturing and Product Launch for Elio Motors, the E-Series build is a monumental step for successfully moving the Elio from engineering and design development to eventual commercial production.

"The E-Series vehicles are an important bridge from the prototype phase to the commercial production phase," Raffin said. "Building the E-Series vehicles in Detroit allows for a seamless and timely execution because the majority of our original equipment supplier partnerships are based here. All of the learning that we gain during the E-Series vehicle build will be transitioned to our production facility in Shreveport for our 100 pre-production vehicle builds that are slated for the end of the year."

Raffin said the Elio Motors Pilot Operations Center was established adjacent to Technosports Creative – the company that built Elio prototypes P2 through P5 – to facilitate the transfer of knowledge as the company transitions from the prototype development phase to the E-Series.

The continued progress with the E-Series build comes on the heels of a busy first quarter for Elio Motors. Among the company's highlights:

  • Elio Motors raised nearly $17 million in a Regulation A+ stock sale.
  • Elio Motors stock began trading on the OTCQX market, making Elio Motors the first company to raise money through Regulation A+ and have its shares go public.
  • Elio Motors announced its innovative ePlus options ordering system at the New York International Auto Show.

EM is following the sequence outlined in their SEC filing from last September, it has been pretty clear since they closed the Reg A+ offering what the general timeline would be from that point on-wards.

So we are in month 2 of the 15-month timeline?
I think I need to move the expected delivery date in my signature out again. :(

More like Month 3, since that is where builds are/were supposed to begin. And that would put the beginning of "Vehicle Production" on-track for Month 12 (aka September of this year). If the final 3 Months of the 15 Month plan is to produce and collect data on the 100 Fleet autos, then January 2017 could be a realistic beginning of public production.

In his last press conference at the New York Auto Show Paul stated that the E-Series was now under construction. There is frequently a lag between the time any company does something and the time they choose to announce it. I suspect that's the case here. I do know that the flurry of production Parts they've been releasing from design to Manufacturing includes a lot of stuff that's going to be involved in testing. The dash, of which we've seen a recent photon is a good example. If you want to crash test a car, that's one of the parts that people might hit so it has to be involved.

The bottom line, yes I'm a little surprised by this announcement. Perhaps it means that they'll actually got Parts in hand for some of these builds. It would be a horrible problem if they got partway through building 25 e cars and discovered they no longer could get or did not have all the parts needed.

The press release said the first completed a car would be used for brake testing, that is testing and calibrating the ABS system. They may not need a whole bunch of trim parts in order to do that. So perhaps that's why that particular car is first up.

I said no they have a very elaborate plan for building a car comma using it for a test, then moving it to another test for which it is suitable, and then on to a third test if needed, and then finally destructive testing if appropriate. That way they get the maximum use out of just 25 test vehicles. The whole plan is programmed out, and the only real variables at this point are the ability to get the parts and get the cars assembled. And they will certainly be building E-2 whike E-1 is already undergoing testing

When the announcement involves a new product, I've always found the exact opposite to be true.

If you've been burned as often as Elio Motors has been by making announcements and then not having things work out, such as the first engine run Fiasco, you might be a little cautious about announcing things ahead of time. Also Elio Motors is pretty gun-shy right now because of their new publicly held status. They're worried about two things. First, being blamed for non-performance. Second, depending on where and how the information was released, they are leery of being accused of insider trading. The second reason is the one that makes it harder for those of us who have some Elio connections to get information that has not been publicly released and cleared by the lawyers.

So while some companies certainly leap ahead with announcements and then have to backtrack afterwards, Elio is working like hell not to do that. Once bitten twice shy!
