FUN LITTL' MAP EXERCISE...
Use Google Earth to see how bop's Elio plans to avoid (at-all-cost) the Houston Freeway PERPETUALLY HORRIFIC TRAFFIC JAMS (on way from north of Houston down south to Galveston) .
[ Most native Houstonians pronounce Houston as: "U-ston." ]
Far north of Houston, goin' south, exit I-45 (marker 72-B) onto Hardy Toll Road. Go south on toll road to Loop 610 east & southward on to the I-10 exit - east.
Going east on I-10 and shortly and after passing Turtle Bayou, exit Interstate for Tx 61 south. Tx 61 south eventually intersects with Tx Farm to Market 562 or, FM 562 south.
Going FM 562 south intersects with FM 1985. Take FM 1985 east to Texas Hwy 124. Take Tx 124 south to the community of High Island and onto Tx 87 west.
You're on a coastal road Tx 87 going west to Galveston (via Gilchrist, Caplen, Crystal Beach, Bolivar Beach and Port Bolivar communities).
Ride vehicle and passenger free a 15-20 minute Bolivar Ferry over to Galveston. (For free entertainment. Take a loaf of bread onto ferry. Set brake. Depart vehicle and go to back ferry rail. Feed flocks of following "sea gulls". Break bread slices and roll into golf ball size (or smaller). Gulls have become acrobatically expert in catching bread in mid-air maneuver.)
Reverse road trip all as the same to avoid those "always clogged" Houston Freeways.
So, an extra 35 minute transit route is guaranteed to save save you up to 3-4 hours on a clogged urban mess.
Note word..."guaranteed."
Been there, done it all, many ah time ! Takes the pain out of visiting the Gulf Coast.
P.S. Crystal Beach is a very, very clean beach. bop's favorite time - Jan/Feb (beach cool, w/o big crowds)

It's funny that you should mention Highway 87. That's effectively my back yard. Technically it's just beyond my back yard sin it backs up to the Highway 87 ROW. Anyhow, it used to continue due south through Port Arthur along the beach to High Island. Now it ends in South Port Arthur. The road was washed out by a series of small tropical storms in the seventies and never rebuilt. You now have to go IH-10 to Winnie and take Highway 124 to High Island.
