So, this is an Idea I've been kicking around for a while, and drew up some sketches on paper (which, if you've been around for a while, you may have seen). Well now I've gone and created a 3D mock-up of my idea on the ol' P4 Sketchup model.

Obviously, it would need a new license plate mounting point, and new taillights integrated into the back. This adds several cubic feet of storage space in the form of side boxes and a deep rear box. I didn't model in the door locations, and obviously it will need a special hatch to allow for access to the gas cap.

These images all use parallel projection, so it doesn't look quite like it would in person.

As to removing the tire skirts to change a flat? Well.....I haven't figured that out yet, but it would require custom skirts anyways, so I figure we could work in a hinged door to access the wheel.

    Very cool (I like it!)
Make the front intakes work, and you could duct (flat duct under cargo) it out the rear so it wouldn't disrupt the Aero of the Elio
Or have it cool the rear brake and the passenger.

I might make a suggestion on it. Extra weight is best lower or forward or both.
But if choosing to just go lower, it could be integral with the rear skirt, and be a detachable feature. Internally, storage should favor being forward in the box.
For example the worse case for the elio is an outside luggage rack on top at the back. The best case would be just behind the front wheels, no comment about how fugly that could be. Would be better to have an after-market front-end with full fenders.

BTW, I was very amused the other day when my wife said 'fugly' several times in comments on some subject, possibly a 'Trump' discussion. She thought it meant fairly-ugly. I explained the 'real' replacement words, and she hasn't used it since. In a funny way, it was sooo cute how she was using it. I think she heard it on a stand-up comedian video from Comedy Central. Never take the CC at face value! lol.

Did you also explain "M-FUGLY" just to be proactive? :becky:

These pictures bring to mind the conversation regarding JATO.

Admitting I'm still married, you have to conclude that I did not. :-)

I like it too but worry about the practical considerations you mention, modifying the body, and cost. How about more conventional fiberglas saddlebags left and right like a BMW bike has that would mount on the thru structure underneath that the right side bicycle carrier would mount to.

I was just thinking a couple of MC bags could be mounted to the sides.
