FAQ Including E-Series Info!
by The Elio Team

Happy Friday Elio’ers! We hope you had a fantastic week and are ready for an even better weekend. After a long work week, we’re always on the lookout for a reason to celebrate, and fortunately for all of us, almost every day is a National ___ Day, so let’s see what we have coming up this weekend.

For those of us with a sweet tooth, today is National Dessert Day. It is also National Be Bald and Be Free Day (no, we did not make that up.) Saturday is National I Love Lucy Day and Sunday is National Dictionary Day. It’s safe to say that if you’re looking for an excuse to have fun this weekend, you won’t have to look very hard!

Followers of Elio Motors are an inquisitive bunch, probably because the Elio is a conversation starter itself. People who are just learning about us have a ton of questions, like how many wheels, how can you get such incredible gas mileage, how many colors, etc. Then you have our most ardent followers who like to ask engineering questions that we will answer and share as we get closer to production. In an attempt to answer some of the most common questions from both newbies and hardcore Elio fans, here are some common questions that have come in through email:

Q) What’s going on with the E-Series vehicles?

A) The E-Series vehicles are progressing as planned. We have shared E-1A going to Continental, E-1D heading west and the fact that one E-Series vehicle will stay at our Pilot Operations Center to be used as a “match vehicle.” Stay tuned, as we will have a ton of great information that we will share with you shortly about our progress. As a heads-up, make sure to check out next week’s Momentum, which will have the latest news on an exciting E-Series vehicle development.

Q) What comes standard in the Elio? Where can I get specs?

A) If you’re looking for some basic information on the vehicle, click here for an informative PDF. Feel free to print it off and pass it around the office!

Q) Is the Elio electric?

A) The Elio runs on regular unleaded gasoline and is powered by an IAV and Elio Motors designed traditional internal combustion engine. The secret to the great mileage is the efficient engine, plus the design of the vehicle!

Q) Do you offer test drives?

A) Our plan is to have a “ride and drive” series across the country prior to production. With our “ride and drive” series, reservation holders and fans will be able to get the Elio feel before they take delivery of their awesome new ride!

Q) Speaking of delivery, how will I get my Elio?

This is a fairly common question. There are quite a few determining factors, such as if you have a reservation, your reservation level, etc. What we can tell you is that there will be some pretty great options to choose from. Reservation holders will receive an email a couple months before their vehicle is ready, and at that point they can pick their color, transmission, options, and delivery option.

Thanks to everyone who reaches out to us and asks great questions. We love the fact that our fans want to know everything there is to know about us, and we will continue to keep everyone informed. Don’t forget to check next week’s Momentum for an E-Series update!

Elio Preview Tour:

Key words in there "The E-Series vehicles are progressing as planned" and that there will be news in next week's Momentum.

Hopefully that news is substantial testing progress and preparations for the second phase of test vehicles. Per the plan laid out back in the Reg A+ offering, we should be in month 5 of the 6 month testing and validation phase.

There is a link to the E-Series in the Blog version of that news letter; so I followed it; here's what was at the other end of it:

Meet the 23 E-Series Vehicles | Elio Momentum v65

August 4, 2016
E-Series Vehicles: Tough Testing Makes The Elio Ready for Primetime
It’s August and, if you are a football fan, it’s a great time of year. The National Football League regular season is right around the corner.
Right now, in 32 camps across the country, NFL teams are working out the kinks and fine-tuning their offenses, defenses, and special teams, all in an effort to get ready for the real kickoff in September.
In a sense, that’s the phase we’re in with the E-Series vehicles. Much like a coaching staff draws up plays and strategies, our engineers have developed a great design. In football, it takes a well-run, intense training camp to get everything working the way it’s intended. For Elio Motors, moving from prototype to production means testing and validating our design using the E-Series. But, instead of running wind sprints, we’ll be spending time in the wind tunnel.
This is when we go from concept to reality. Frankly, it’s one of the most important phases in our history. We’ll be smashing vehicles, slamming doors and hoods, testing in brutal heat and arctic cold. Heck, we’ll even be pelting our own vehicles with rocks. It’s all an effort to make sure our vehicles meet and even exceed your expectations.

The E1A is currently at Continental, where one of the world’s foremost safety engineering teams is fine-tuning the Elio’s braking system.

  • 02_-_VidCap_-_Paul_Elio_in_News_Conference_Video.jpg
Paul Elio introduces the E-Series E1A vehicle at a supplier meeting June 30th in Livonia, Mich. The E1B will be what’s called “The Integration Vehicle” and will be used for the packaging of the latest components, also known as the “Match Car.” Any changes and modifications that are made to other E-Series’ vehicles also will be made on the E1B. It will stay at the Pilot Operations Center in Livonia, Mich. and serve as a physical record of our changes and modifications.

The next two vehicles will be built out of sequence – the E1D and the E1E. These vehicles will be used for chassis and engine testing. These test vehicles do not require every single Elio part to perform the needed testing. Therefore, we’ll be able to complete them a little sooner than the E1C, which will be used for marketing purposes.

    Eseries.jpg
The E1D and E1E vehicles will be built next — out of sequence — to allow chassis and engine testing.Though the E1C is not truly a test vehicle, it plays an important role in our future. It will be significantly closer to a production vehicle than the P5.

The Next 18: Slamming, Skidding and Impact Testing Our Way to Success

Once we get through the brake, engine, and chassis tweaks, the real fun begins. Vehicles E1F through E1W will go through a gauntlet of tests for durability, aerodynamics, and safety. Here are just a few of the tests these vehicles will endure:

    Wind Tunnel Testing

Reaching our target goal of up to 84 MPG requires maximizing our aerodynamics. This will require hours in the wind tunnel where minute details from the angle of the windshield to the width of the mirror will be tested and retested.

    Extreme Temperature Tests

The Elio needs to work in the Phoenix heat, the Alaskan cold, and everything in between. We’ll test the vehicle in both extremes, making sure all the systems work properly whether its 120 degrees or minus 20 degrees.

    Interior Driver Interaction

You’ve got to be comfortable in your Elio, right? We’ve got that covered too, as the E-Series will go through a litany of ergonomic tests to make sure the seats work and the controls are within reach.

    Driveability

The E-Series will be tested for braking, cornering, acceleration, and top speed.

    Door Slam/Deck Slam

How do you know the vehicle’s doors and trunk will work time and time again? Slam them shut over and over again. These tests will measure all the components in the door and trunk systems and how they stand up to long-term wear and tear.

    Wiper Testing

Sure, it barely rains in our home in Phoenix, but we want people in Seattle to drive an Elio too! We’ll run the wipers again and again until they’re slappin’ out a tempo like the old Eddie Rabbit song to make sure that they work over the long haul.

    Noise, Vibration, and Harshness

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) testing is where we work on removing all the shakes, rattles and squeaks.

    Paint Durability

We also want to make sure your Elio paint job lasts, too. We’ll go so far as pelting it with road salt and rocks to see how the paint job holds up.

    Impact Testing

For those of you who remember Vince and Larry, the public service announcement crash dummies, well, maybe we’ve got a job for them here. Even though we are not required by law, safety testing is extremely important to our long-term goals. We’ll be taking the E-Series vehicles and subjecting them to many of the same rigorous impact tests that NHTSA mandates for vehicle manufacturers.

Like we said, it’s a gauntlet of tests. But, like those tough two-a-day practices that give a football team its edge, we’re in the vehicle version of training camp. And, we’ll work our tails off to make these the best vehicles possible.

Since the "E-Series vehicles are progressing as planned"...
What are the chances of seeing the 100 fleet units being built in December as planned?

EM said 3 E's have been built. I don't assume there are more and frankly, 3 is better than 0. I would be happy to see all the E's built and fully tested by the end of December.

How much of the vehicle has to be complete before door slam testing? You'd probably want to have all the cockpit glass on place at least. Ever notice how if you have a window open, everyone seems to slam the car door or how it's harder to close the last door when Windows are all up? The Elio has a lot less interior volume than your current car... at least for everyone except just a couple. I'll bet the pressure difference makes closing doors a trick.

It's still possible for the pre-production fleet of 100 to be built this year if all of the parts are available in time (assuming they've been working on the tooling and line setup as the E series builds are progressing), but the lead times on parts is what scares me on the schedule. I'm sure they've been working to procure all of the major powertrain, chassis and interior components all along the way. The one thing left that needs physical hardware is the HVAC system. I don't know if all of the ducting design work can be completed and parts produced in about a month (considering holidays) unless Red DOT can use only off-the-shelf modular duct parts to configure a workable system. It may be possible, but I have no idea how likely it is.
