out of what this link reports to be the History's 10 Best Selling Cars Of All Time, I would have only guessed one .... that being the Ford F series

I am a bit torn on the Beetle numbers, I mean sure over 20 million sold, but the new beetle is just SO different, the new Beetle is just a Golf in a new frock.

Yes, but they are all front engine liquid cooled, live rear axle, to me very similar.
The beetles from 1938 to 2004 were air cooled rear wheel drive. Now you get liquid cooled 4/5 cyl Diesel/gas, front wheel drive sitting on the underpinnings of a different car altogether.
My beetle has 1963 fenders/1974 fenders, a 1969 pan, and a 2000 body, all fitting together nicely.

The list omitted the VAZ-2101/Lada 1200 . A Russian car which sold over 19 million units between 1970–1988 .

I am not sure a Lada is really considered a car, or a Trabant for that matter, and this comes from a guy with a car developed in 1932.

my practical knowledge of vehicles is pretty much limited to those that are/were American made .... the exception was a brief ownership of a VW bug .... while I enjoy reading about "fur-in" cars I honestly have no desire to own one .... that is in no way a disparaging comment about out of country cars, simply a personal preference

There was a time that I leased 3 consecutive 3 year leases of Volvo wagons . Basically , the entire '90s were me thinking that my small children were safer in a Volvo .
