Totaled McLaren 720s shows why driving schools are important
Owner had the car for one day before wrapping it around a tree
July 16, 2018

In yet another case of “being that guy,” we have a McLaren 720S wrapped around a tree. This particular example comes via Facebook and someone driving in Fairfax County, Virginia -- more specifically, Great Falls. The driver was sent to the hospital with “non-life-threatening” injuries. But we can only guess that the driver's ego is badly bruised.

The McLaren 720S makes a peak 710 hp from its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With a curb weight under 3,200 pounds, the 720S can reach 60 mph in under three seconds. The Facebook post is in the form of a Fairfax County Police Department public service announcement, and they blame speed for the accident. In a literal sense, at least, they’re almost certainly right. But lack of driver skill is the much more likely root cause of such a scene.

Despite the McLaren’s high levels of handling and braking capability, the driver has to know how to use it. Otherwise physics will step in with swift and ruthless force to let you know where the car’s limitations actually are and what is and isn’t possible. Unfortunately, the throttle, especially the 720’s, can build a lot of speed before physics intervenes. That, in turn, makes for big messes around trees.

What this demonstrates, more than anything, is the value of attending one of the many good driving schools out there. Getting even a basic sense of what a car is capable of helps tremendously. Cars give all kinds of clues that it’s time to slow down, you just have to know how to feel them out. And, besides, driving school is a good time.

If you can afford a car that costs as much as a darn decent house, you can afford to attend a few of these schools, let alone one. It’s worth avoiding the embarrassment alone.

Yeah, but you forgot to include the price.
Now on the lower end of the scale, I found this comparison
Tesla Models Comp.gif

This is a bit more of a realistic comparison, you know, something we commoners can afford.
The Tesla model you quoted is how much? $120,000+

But I admit, the base model has great performance numbers, but how many people go with the base model? As a matter of fact, Tesla took the short range, base model off the available list, for the time being, but they said they would bring it back, later, didn't say when, just later.
The base model is just not a good money maker for now, and the tax credits have started shutting down on Tesla because they hit the 200K mark, 2019 they are a thing of the past.
