If you’ve ever seen an orchestra in action, there may be a few major players that immediately grab your attention. While you may immediately notice the gesticulating conductor or the principal players who masterfully execute a difficult solo, it takes a talented ensemble to bring the production together. Similarly, a vehicle requires a cohesive unit comprising of different parts to run successfully. The engine of a vehicle can be compared to the leading soloist, while the concertmaster who tunes the instruments can be likened to a vehicle’s engine mounts. In both cases, both roles prove to be essential in achieving their ultimate goals.

If you are a supporter of Elio Motors, or have seen our August SEC filing, you likely know that at this stage of the project the vast majority of our efforts are going toward funding. Our team works every day to move the project forward, and our goal from the very beginning has been to include our supporters along the journey and provide an insider’s look into the process. Today’s Momentum will take a look at an unheralded, yet important feature: the engine mounts of the Elio.



Engine mounts are straightforward components that simply mount the engine to the vehicle. Engine mounts are bolted to the frame of the vehicle on one side and the engine on the other. Most consumer vehicles will utilize three or four engine mounts and the Elio will have a total of three (located on the left-hand side, right-hand side, and rear). Even though the mounts are simple in concept, they are an important component to the vehicle.



A well-designed mount will do two things well in addition to keeping the engine and transmission attached to the vehicle.

1) Isolate the engine and reduce noise, vibration, harshness (NVH). A poorly engineered engine mount will result in significant NVH from the engine. The Elio will be using aluminum brackets and elastomer bushings on both the engine and frame side of the mount. The bushings on each side of the mount are also needed to minimize road impacts on the engine and frame.

2) Minimize engine roll. The design and placement of the brackets balances the engine both front-to-back and side to side. The correct placement of the mounts will keep the engine balanced and minimize roll, thereby making the entire process more efficient.

Just as every member of an orchestra’s ensemble is a vital cog in the execution of a symphony, every component of a vehicle is essential in building a quality vehicle. The engine mounts of the Elio might not be the most noticeable aspect of the vehicle, but they are a necessary component in every vehicle. As we continue on our mission, we will continue to give our supporters a look inside the process of bringing a vehicle to market.
