Since I will be doing some extended traveling in my Elio I would like to maybe lay down and take a nap.

If you open the trunk, fold down the back seat and push the from seat forward I believe I will have enough room to lay down. I will develop a screen attachment to cover the open area when the trunk door is raised. Just keep the bugs out.

Anyone else have thoughts?

In a pinch, you could keep the hatch closed (it's pretty narrow anyway) and sleep with your feet back that way and your head forward. If you had a mat to lay on, I think that wouldn't be that uncomfortable. It would also make it easier to sit up and get out. Just my thought. Of course, you may be planning on laying that way anyway and just want to have the open feel. Hopefully, with pop-out back windows, some screening for the front ones, you'll get some breeze in there. If you had a small fan, it might even be comfortable. I could see a screen porch type of set-up for the hatch though... maybe just some cloth screening and a handful of good magnets since the hatch should be steel would do the trick well enough.

Already a good idea with the magnets. Was thinking of Velcro. Keep the ideas coming.
It may not be the right application but they make temporary screen doors that you use for your house. There is a magnetic enclosure right down the center so you can just push your way out and it "closes" once you pass. It wouldn't fit the Elio but it could be repurposed for the Elio fairly easily. Some creative cutting and you could make an easily attached screen with an easy to access opening.

Here: You get the idea. This one is a little expensive though. I used a $19 one when I wanted to open the patio of the apartment I was in temporarily while going through the house buying process last spring.

I am planning on trips with my Rocket Silver Elio too, but I will likely plan on Hotel at night or my camping gear for sleeping. It is darn tough to make a comfortable sleeping space in any car. Even my Caprice Station wagon is not that great. A good tent on a fold up cot works way better and roomy too. With the fuel savings, a hotel seems warranted too. I am game to try sleeping in the Elio, but not too optimistic about it yet. Send my Elio right away though and I will do Beta testing next weekend. Go Elio.

I just got back yesterday from a 4 day trip on my motorcycle. Camped out in my tent for two nights with the bright moon in the middle of Nevada (Eureka). Stellar weather and great ride on highway 50 (America's Loneliest Highway). Would love to run the Elio there.

Also, it's only 47" front to back with the back seat down... and 14" wide... and 10" tall opening. I'm wider and longer than that...

Now, with the front seat all the way forward and leaned forward, it looks like it would be long enough to lay down in but I haven't seen that measurement anywhere.

The real problem with stretching out in the back of your elio, even if you're short like Jake and I, is that you have to take everything out of the way out to be able to lie down in the Elio. There just isn't room for a prone human body and any kind of luggage.
