More Environmentally Friendly than a Cow’s What?

Yes, we said it. Elio Motors is more environmentally friendly than cow farts. How do we know this? In celebration of Earth Day, Elio Motors, Inc., CEO Paul Elio challenged his team to put into context the vehicle’s positive environmental impact. Of course, the team came up with some compelling information.

Driven 15,000 miles annually, the vehicle will save its owner $1,500 in fuel costs.
Over 10 years, the vehicle could save American drivers 5.1 billion gallons of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 99.5 billion pounds.

The team also found an interesting fact to put the vehicle’s environmental impact in every day terms. Elio Motors’ vehicle will be more environmentally friendly than a year’s worth of one cow’s farts. Here’s the science:

One cow produces 242 lbs of methane a year through burps and flatulence. Methane traps 20 times more heat than CO2 over a 100-year period. (SOURCE: Get Green Living) In a year, the average cow will emit 4,840 lbs of CO2 equivalent greenhouses gases.
Elio Motors vehicle, driven 20,000 miles, will emit only 4,500 lbs of CO2.

So… the Elio is more environmentally friendly than cow farts.

“I’ll admit, it’s not the most conventional measure for environmental efficiency,” Elio said of the cow comparison. “But, when you realize that we are more environmentally friendly than something found in nature every day, we are clearly on the right path.”

The internal combustion engine is going to be part of the transportation industry for many years into the future. The key will be for companies such as Elio Motors to come up with revolutionary vehicle designs to use existing technology in a more Earth-friendly way.

Elio Motors is clearly leading the way. The combination of the high fuel efficiencyand low cost will result in high volumes of the Elio sold and a significant impact on oil dependence and the environment.

Another Big Step Forward

Yes it’s true. In case you missed the live announcement on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 on FOX & Friends, Pep Boys, the nation's leading automotive aftermarket service and retail chain, has been named as the official service provider for Elio Motors. This partnership adds a key building block to Elio Motors launch strategy given it’s no small task to win the confidence of this leading national service brand.

“Providing a convenient and professional service experience is one of the most important elements in creating an overall positive customer ownership experience, so this is a crucial step on our development,” said Paul Elio, CEO of Elio Motors.

Exciting news like this often creates questions. Following are answers to the top questions being asked since the announcement. This Friday’s 3-Wheeling Blog will address even more as we continue to move our vision forward.

Why Pep Boys?
Pep Boys’ rich history, dating back nearly 100 years, makes the company a cultural icon, and a well-known and trusted brand to our future customers. With 800 service centers and 7,500 service bays in 35 states and Puerto Rico, it gives us more service locations than Volkswagen, Kia, Subaru, Mercedes Benz and BMW to name a few.

If someone lives in a market where there is no Pep Boys, how will they get their vehicle serviced?
The recent announcement of the Pep Boys partnership is a major step forward, as it provides service for 90 percent of our customers. For the remaining markets we are currently evaluating some of those options and will certainly have service in place when we launch in 2015.

Is the Elio something that a lot of "Do-it-Yourself" types will like to service themselves?
Absolutely. The Elio has a relatively simple design, so it’s something that the car enthusiast who likes to get their hands dirty will really enjoy.

Know that as you read this, the Elio Motors and Pep Boys teams are deeply immersed in developing service solution. So as soon as all the i’s and t’s are dotted and crossed, the details will be shared.

40-Year Auto Industry Manufacturing Veteran Brings Leadership, Expertise to Elio Motors Launch

One of the keys to producing a low-cost vehicle is ensuring maximum efficiency in our manufacturing operations. Gino Raffin, Vice President of Manufacturing and Product Launch, is a 40-year auto industry veteran and former Chrysler Corp. manufacturing executive. Gino will oversee all aspects of manufacturing and assembly at the Shreveport, La., manufacturing facility including putting the right team and processes in place to make Elio Motors a world-class manufacturer.After beginning his career with the Chrysler Corporation LLC in engineering in the Steering and Suspension division, Gino developed significant experience in all aspects of manufacturing engineering, product launch’s and plant management. Most recently he served as Director of Advance Manufacturing Engineering for the Truck Platform with launch responsibilities. Gino was also the plant manager of the Chrysler Minivan Plant in Windsor, Ontario for five years and orchestrated a cultural change, which was recognized by the Canadian Government with the Total Quality Award.

During his tenure, Gino held various positions in numerous automotive plants around the country focusing his expertise in absorbing the appropriate knowledge and skills to effect positive change in both the hard side objectives and the cultural change mentality to product tangible soft side improvements. Gino then moved into launch management where he served as Director of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and led new product launches focused on Product System Teams whose roster included members from the enterprise wide “horizontal” colleagues — the minivan, large/small car, and the truck platforms. After retiring from Chrysler, Gino returned briefly to assist two platforms in defining the launch methodology based on historical successful launches.

Elio Motors is Good for America  

A strong manufacturing base is important for any nation that wants to prosper in the global economy. According to the World Trade Organization, 80 percent of global trade comes from manufactured merchandise.  

In the United States, manufacturing accounts for just 11 percent of the total employment, but it accounts for 60 percent of all exports and 68 percent of all private sector research and development, according to the Brookings Institute.    But, manufacturing has decreased significantly in the United States. From 1997 to 2012, the United States lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs – a 32.9 percent decline.

These statistics didn't just alarm Paul Elio. They moved him to take action.  

“Manufacturing is too important to our long-term global competitiveness to give away,” Elio said. “As a nation, we need to have a strong manufacturing core, where we are constantly inventing, improving and innovating. It’s why I went into engineering in the first place…to make things. And, to make things better. Elio Motors is dedicated to creating American jobs and working to make our manufacturing sector and our economy stronger.”

Despite the dip in manufacturing over the past two decades, it is still an overall bright spot in our economy. With nearly 11 million jobs, manufacturing is the fourth largest employer in the United States, according to the 2012 US Census Bureau. Those jobs also pay well. From 1997 to 2012, the average pay for a manufacturing job rose from $33,907 to $52,686.   In addition, for every manufacturing job, an additional 4.6 jobs are created, according to U.S. International Trade Commission and the Department of Commerce.

The reason for all the spin-off jobs? The manufacturing sector invests heavily on materials and capital expenses. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2011 United States manufacturers invested $3.2 trillion in materials and an additional $147 billion in capital expenditures.

Elio Motors is projected to create more than 1,500 jobs, the majority concentrated in the manufacturing facility in Shreveport, Louisiana. In addition, the company is committed to using 90 percent North American made content in the vehicle, creating job opportunities at the many supplier companies contributing to the development of Elio Motors.

At a time when many manufacturing jobs are going away, Elio Motors will provide a much needed boost to American jobs and economic activity.

Let's look at the facts and realities of the world we live in: gas today is near an all-time high; space is becoming a smaller and smaller commodity; cars cost more than the average house did only a few decades ago; and traditional personal transportation isn't working like it used to.
