I think Durk has a larger, and valid, point beyond just the issue of unions. There have been startups in the past that were not exactly welcomed by the established auto makers, and efforts were made,(successfully), to stop the newcommers. Those auto makers have a lot of clout and know how politics (and dirty pool) are played. Are they actually going to sit back and watch the Elio roll out when the closest thing they have to offer in the same market costs over twice as much and gets half the mileage? If Elio proves it can be done the next question will be why didn't Ford/GM already do it? The status quo offerings from the big makers will be met with a resounding "not good enough!"
