I would have liked to have had one of these Marlins in Hornady's relatively new .338 Marlin...

But Remington screwed these up so bad that they stopped making the guns.

I have a Ruger M77 in 7.62x39. Fun to shoot, cheap and easy to reload. Your rifle will be the Elio of deer rifles. Enough power and range to do the job but not so much overkill as a .30/06 or .300 mag.

I thought the "job" was obvious when I said that Amazed's rifle would be the Elio of deer rifles. The Elio would not be the best choice for a couple on a 2 week vacation, or for a trip to Costco, or for drag racing. It will be great for short trips (closer ranges) and small loads (whitetails at reasonable ranges).If deer hunting to you means shooting at a running mule deer buck at 400 yards the 7.62/39 would be a poor choice. I don't shoot at anything other than coyotes much past 200 yards.The 7.62x39 has almost the same energy as a .30/30 at 100yds or so and more past that range. It starts out with less but the sharp pointed bullet retains velocity better. Amazed will be able to place his shot much more accurately than with an open sighted .30/30. Therefore I think it is as good a deer rifle as the .30/30, which was long considered the standard. I think that many American hunters are burdened with rifles that kick too hard, make too much noise and cost too much to shoot. As a result they don't shoot well because they don't practice. I hunt in Nebraska and South Dakota and I shot my first 3 deer with 4 shots with a .223.

If one goes by the popular recommendation of...
800 to 1000 ft. lb being the minimum bullet impact energy for white tail....
The 7.62x39 should be a good 150 - 200 yd. brush cartridge.

The 30-30 meets those minimum levels @ 200 - 250 yds.
The 30-06 (and .338 Marlin) meets them out to about 650 - 750 yds.
The Hornady .338 Marlin ballistics mirror their 30-06 cartridge almost exactly.

The 30-06 has a massive 2.44 times the amount of energy that a 7.62x39 does @ 150 yds.
The 30-06 has 2.01 times the energy that the 30-30 does @ 150 yds.

Of course, to split hairs, it depends on the particlular cartridge, gun, barrel length, phase of the moon, etc...
As always, being reasonably certain of a well placed shot is as important as the tool being used.

Just for comparison, the .223 meets those minimums @ 100 to 150 yds.
I was surprised to find that my .35 Remington meets those figures out to 300 to 350 yds.
Now I know why it seems to hit harder and puts 'em down quicker than a 30-30.
To extend the analogy, think of the CZ as an economical and rifle.

The CZ is specifically built for the Russian ammo (bore dia. of .311).
So American brass doesn't do as well from this gun as the Soviet surplus.
Even if you could reload the steel, it's so cheap that it wouldn't be worth the time..
