Thank you all for your input. I was successful in getting her talk about the possibility of owning an Elio, even mentioning the color she'd want me to get ("not red"), and that is farther than I have made it since I have been talking to her about it early this year. I think if I keep pushing the economic benefit, including the benefits of the possible gas card financing and allocating some savings to benefit her, I think it could happen. Thanks again.
Good morning, ternion! Think I was one of the very first to share my thoughts with you and to offer my 2 cents worth. . . . .

But after coming back by and reading all of these posts on the subject, I think there is a pattern beginning to form here; looks like everyone is "tip toeing around the issue at hand. . . . . . .

So here goes, ternion; my HONEST opinion?

Time to "man up, put on your pants and say: " Momma, Ya know how very much I love and respect you and your opinions, but now I've heard yours, I AM GOING TO BUY AN ELIO!"

And that's that.

Not the first time that she has disagreed with you, and will NOT be the last. And in the end, do Ya really think that she will divorce you over a $6800 dollar car? Think not!

Go get in line, man, with the rest of us. . . . . . . It's really not too bad sleeping on the couch. Don't have to fight with anyone for the covers on cold nights. o_O :)

I have to laugh at your wife's assumption this is a "trendy liberal yuppies only" vehicle. At one point this site was 95% men and 65% were over 50. If the percentages have changed it isn't by much That rarely qualifies them for the yuppy title. As for liberal. Not a chance as near as I can tell. LOL Ugly is in the eyes of the beholder. I think the Elio is cute and can't wait to drive mine. BTW, I am 73 year old woman. As far as practical for a 12 mile commute. I used to live in SF and other parts of the Bay Area for over 10 years. That 12 miles can take forever. City mileage is predicted to be 49 mpg. Obviously your 18 mpg Tacoma doesn't even come close. Will 4 people be riding in it? Not likely if you want to be legal. For someone like you it is an "and" car. It is much more practical than your Tacoma.

BTW, welcome from Oregon, ternion. You don't have to have a reservation to join the site. It is a great place to learn al lot about the Elio and about a lot of other topics also. We are a very diverse and interesting group so simply jump in and enjoy the ride with or without a reservation. I suspect it won't take long before you will decide the Elio is worth the risk. If you dare, encourage your wife to read also. But be very careful - you may end up getting two Elios. :) Z
My wife wants it as much, if not more than I do. After all we both commute 130 miles each day, and she writes the monthly gas bill (my checkbook) simple economics, she wants one of her own. But first I need mine!

My wife is also not too pleased. However, I do need a new vehicle and we have a wagon that is her main car. She wasn't too pleased about the Chevy Sprint I drove for 7 years. Since I'm salting some bucks away, the Elio should be mostly paid for by next Thanksgiving. Also, remember, its easier to get absolution than permission.
Not sure about 'absolution', but forgiveness is easier than permission. I'm Baptist, You must be Catholic. Been married 37 years. Gotten forgiveness much easier than permission!

I sure you could tell her, that with the gas savings alone, there would be enough money left over to buy one new pocket book a month. You can change that to shoes if needed. But really , if you get with a local Elio club before, and ,or after you get your Elio the experiences ,fun and camaraderie most likely will be well worth the admission.

But Music Man, if he wasn't on the couch, he wouldn't need so many covers on cold nights. :-) Z

Maybe not, Z. Kinda depends on how long he's been married.

Either way, it's time to make his statement to his "boss." :)

Still might not work, but at some point, the dance has to end. . . . , even if it's not in our favor. :)

Good News All! I convinced my wife to let me reserve an Elio. All I had to do was basically promise her a new house.

We were wanting to move to a nicer area anyway, which would be farther from work and would give us a stronger reason to have an Elio. On the same day, (today) I received an email from Elio announcing a Black Friday Promotion, which I am really hoping is a short-lived 50% bonus promotion. I think the hope for an extra 25% (would be another $62 with my $250 all-in reservation) is worth giving up a few spots and waiting until Friday.

That really says something for the Elio if you can move to a nicer home and buy a new car in the same year - Awesome!
