Would It Be Possible To Add Word Filtering?

There are a few topics that continue to be rehashed ad nauseam. The only filter I am aware of is to ignore an individual but that is far too large of a filter as often those members do contribute otherwise.

If possible, it would be extremely valuable to add a word filtering mechanism. For example, being able to say "ignore posts with elgin and hate". Is this possible?

Thanks

I'm sorry Jeff, but it sounds like you want a filter to protect yourself from ideas that might offend you.
Much like the children in colleges who want "safe" areas. Areas where their opinions won't be challenged.
I almost thought that would be good at one time until someone I had been disagreeing with made an offhand comment that forced me to re-evaluate my views on certain subjects.
And not to switch subjects, but I just added 1 + 1 and put HUDs together with that other subject and decided that technology I had at one time considered stupid solved a problem cheaply. And that thought came because someone I used to argue with said something that caused me to shift my focus.
I guess that they can give you that filter, but if they do, and if you use it, you may miss that one thought that changes everything.

JEBar: Sorry for putting my two cents in.

Nope, I'm willing to listen to all kinds of ideas. I just grow tired of the same discussion over and over, especially when it permeates all threads instead of being limited to a single thread.

It may be good to revisit such discussions for new members but I would really like to avoid having to rehash things that have been discussed to death multiple times. This is especially true of instances in which EM has given its definitive word on something and people simply refuse to accept it.

That may be a fault of newbies like me. I've monitored the site for something like a year before joining but the number of threads is...daunting, and honestly, until very recently, I wouldn't have known an Elgin if it was next to my breakfast. So, for my part, sorry for the nausea. And I do get how easily the comments can go off track and try to be respectful of that tho some seem quite broad. I, for one, am still getting used to finding my way around, and this week excepted, won't have lots of time to get self-schooled, so apologies in advance if I mess up long-timers.

Hey DeltaMike, no apologies needed and please feel free to ask questions; that is why the forum exists. Most folks on the forum will be happy to help with constructive discussions even if they don't necessarily agree with your viewpoint.

The purpose of my request was not intended to be an attack on people nor was it any attempt to blame folks for discussing things over and over. It was a simple request to see if it would be possible to add word filtering so that people that are not interested in certain types of discussions that seem to proliferate across multiple threads instead of being isolated in a single thread that can be easily ignored, could have a new type of filter created to help them avoid those conversations.

As for the elgin discussion, it is but one of many of these types of religious discussions that have proliferated on the board. Because elgin continues to be a hot topic that was stoked again with the P5 debut it seemed like an easy example to demonstrate why such a filter could be useful. Whether it be discussions about which side the fuel door is on, EV, diesel, complaints about somebody done somebody wrong, etc., I am certain there are many such discussions that eventually all of us would like to be able to ignore and having a general purpose filter based on words might be a great way to do that.

That said, I need to thank JEBar for agreeing to pass on the request and also take to heart that whether it be a protocol or even software issue the request may not be fulfilled.

I agree with Delta....many of us have never joined a thread...this is my first one, although we all know that threads have been around a long while. It's all new to me....nothing was worth my time to join a thread, except for ElioOwners. And...uh....no apologies from me.... perhaps we all just cut each other some slack and enjoy the comraderie?

A filter like that would be very difficult to do.
But ...... How about helping others by telling us in your Avatar?
In NASCAR the rookies run yellow tape on the bumper to show others that they're rookies.

In your Avatar, rather than location and reservation #; Put in: Total Rookie to Forums or something on that order.
Just some kind of sign that tells us.

You're among a group of 3,000 that come from all age groups and walks of life.
Plus some people are just normally hard to get along with (there's a few of those everywhere)
There are times I'll tell people to learn to use the Search Engine after they have started new threads on items that have been discussed to death over hundreds of posts and pages; not to be mean, but because there may have been 30 other people that all have to be tended to in a number of different areas.

So help us to help you; it is give and take, and some give it out more that some care for and other that just take everything personally.
It's we all try working on that happy medium, and that all we ask of anyone.
