Pearl Harbor....

Just a quick thread to honor those that perished on Dec. 7th, 1941. My grandfather was a Pacific-theater Navy Veteran during WWII, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor was his generation's 9/11. I wore my grandfather's neckerchief, custom made for him in the Philippines, to every inspection after bootcamp. I got nothing but compliments on it's appearance, and even more once they heard the story behind it. So here's to my grandfather, and all US Veteran's throughout history. You will always be remembered.

One of my uncles was an aircraft mechanic in the Pacific; a fact that I never knew until his funeral... He simply didn't talk about it.

About a week ago I buried my 95 year old father-in-law. He was a Navy WWII vet. Served on a troop carrier in the Atlantic and a destroyer in the Pacific. Never talked much about his service. But, he always reminded me that " freedom is not free."

we felt the same way when we visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield .... that was when we learned that there is a separate (Arlington type) National Cemetery located on the museum property

Here's a bit of almost forgotten WW2 history. Over the course of the war, twenty eight submarines were built on the western shore of Lake Michigan at Manitwoc, Wisconsin. These boats were all shipped down the Mississippi River system for commissioning in New Orleans, as it was deemed too dangerous to send them through the Lakes and out the St. Laurence River due to U-Boat activity. Four of the twenty eight were lost with all hands; there's talk of a memorial on the Chicago River for them. Here's a photo of the USS Raton being loaded into it's transport drydock at Lockport, Illinois, and with the dd pumped out. (Earl, the museum at Manitwoc has a lot on this. If you've never been, it's definitely worth the trip.)
