Dot Proposes Changes To Nhtsa’s 5-star Safety Rating System

This may have already been mentioned but I found it interesting and was wondering how it may affect the Elio build. I was reading in a daily news article (SME Daily Executive Briefing) that the DOT is looking to make it more difficult for automakers "to score five-star safety ratings" under the proposed changes.

I really have mixed emotions about this .... guess I'm way too old and out of date .... there is no doubt that self driving cars are in the pipeline but I can't see buying one

Self driving cars = a great vehicle for phone twiddlers...

I'm too much into driving. Personally, I'd never own one (well, maybe if I end up disabled), but there's a hell of a lot of people on the road that DON'T like to drive, and getting them into autonomous vehicles would most likely be a good thing.

What? You haven't seen the commercial where the testers can't get the car to actually crash because it automatically stops before hitting the crash target?

If the car were idling and another vehicle was on a collision course with it, would the collision avoidance make the idling car move forward or backward to avoid the collision? And what happens when two cars with collision avoidance are on a collision course with each other? Do they repel each other like magnets? Can't wait to see how this develops.

Just because it is technologically possible does not mean it's a good idea.
Just picture what happens when a kid who has always had all of the built in idiot proofing gets into a car that you actually have to drive. The ambulance chasers will make a fortune!
