You could try repurposing some accordion style paper or fabric blinds (maybe even spray paint them to match your Elio) and use those to cover the sides of the space opened up when you raise the hatch. That will increase your privacy. Then all you'd need is a small rectangle of window screen to cover the rear space. You could attach these pieces permanently (but detachable) so they deploy automatically when you open the hatch.

If they are the accordion style blinds they use in campers, turn them sideways and put them in the channel that the hatch closes into and make sure to cut them to size... They could go all the way around and the accordion shape should give them enough rigidity to hold up the hatch... If they were stiff enough, a line going from the hood latch to the latching mechanism would hold the hatch down and make it at least a LITTLE bit more secure... The interior light could be a pain though.

I just can't see laying down in that space being too comfortable! You might rather look at installing a swivel base drivers seat that could swivel around then lean back and put your legs on the back seat. You wouldn't be flat but might be more comfortable. Something else to look at when we finally get them.

I agree... It's just too narrow and the hinge location of the hatch is only 10" from the floor according to the Elio site.

I think I've seen in some pictures that there's a raised lip around the trunk opening to prevent water from getting in. If that's there in the production version you could just use some mesh fabric with an elastic band sewn into the perimeter.

A couple of magnetic screens for the front windows and you'd have good control over the airflow.
