My home stereo is in need of replacement. Over the years, knobs and switches have been replaced with buttons on remotes. I prefer controls to be on the stereo unit, not on remotes.

How does a person have a stereo with full controls on the unit and not on remotes. I have two ideas but neither is great:

DJ equipment because DJ’s generally do not use remotes.

Lap top computer

The problem with a lap top computer is that other audio sources can not be plugged into it easily.

I believe DJ equipment is being replaced by lap top computers.

A quick look at Crutchfield was not promising.

Any ideas.

Don't buy new. There was very good hifi equipment made in the 70s that still cannot be beat for sound quality.

Either find something that has been gone over, or find someone locally who can do it for you. Have it re-capped and get the switches and pots cleaned. You'll spend about the same as some average off-the-shelf junk, but you'll have something that sounds and looks better.

I have a bunch of older receivers/preamps -- mostly Sansui stuff from the 70s. I really like the sound of Sansui amps. All of my newer stuff is (ironically) tube amplified. No remotes!

Buy new! The best quality AVR brand you can afford.......matched to the best quality speaker brand you can afford......paired to produce the best quality sound. Can't have one without the other.

This is an old thread, but I I'm a bit of an audiophile, though I haven't had the money to invest much in it much these days.

Anyway, I'd peruse Audiogon if you're interested in good quality used equipment.

Howdy, I like vintage hi-fi gear too. Back in 1970 I finally had enough money to buy my first "good" system. Marantz model 18 receiver, Marantz straight line tracking turntable with Shure V15 cartridge, and a pair of AR-5
speakers. The speakers are gone but I still have the receiver and turntable. They're retired now and have a place on display in my music room. The equipment today is much better, but, I swear it was more fun back then....

I don't have the pictures handy because all of mine are in storage, but I have a full setup of Marantz also.
I've got the 280 watts per channel (8ohm) amp, cassette player, turntable is a TEAC, and the Tuner is a Sony.
Speakers were Speakerlab and were junk by the time they were 30years old, so they were scraped and replaced with BOSE 901's, with a Toshiba 12" 100watt woofer

Nice stuff!

My everyday turntable is a Technics SL10 linear tracking.

The receiver and amp are home built.
