They had a blurb on the news about a new Chevrolet electric that they want to sell for $5K... About 150 mile range if I remember the specs they stated. Looks like a miniature smart car.

Yup, the big auto makers could do it. Especially as battery prices drop. Thats why Elio has to find a way soon.

That is $5,300 in China. Wondering if it meets US crash and safety specs and how much would it be if on sale here.

At this point I am thinking of picking up a first gen Miata and converting one of those to electric instead of motor swapping and/or going turbo on mine. I bet that would be stupid fun.

Elio's stated goal is to produce an inexpensive ICE powered high gas-mileage commuter vehicle...

The Elio dream has nothing in common with advanced automobile technologies...

An electric Elio vehicle is probably beyond Elio Motor's capabilities...

Please keep in mind...since 2009 Elio has been attempting to bring a simple ICE vehicle to mass production...

It's doubtful whether Elio has the time or money to redesign their vehicle to suit electric specifications...

Correct. The Elio selling points never included the words, "latest most advanced technology." Quite the opposite. Their selling point was always old, off the shelf technology. As someone who has purchased "latest and greatest" in the past and been amazing when I watched it fall apart in less than a year I'm perfectly ok with old technology that works!

Well the idea would be to ADD an electric version to his production. But he needs to produce what he has first. I would suspect that an electric version of his Elio would have better range than his competators wider body designs. If he can land huge financing, he can ramp up a factory and hire some battery engineers to work on a battery drive. Its way quicker to convert what he has than all those starting from scratch.

Aye, there's the rub with the DOE loan qualifications.
