I know that in South Dakota 4-wheelers and even gasoline powered golf carts can be given a motorcycle tag and driven on the highways .... bring that same rig with an SD tag to North Carolina, where those vehicles cannot be licensed for highway use, and you will likely get a ticket

Jim

Jim, you did bring up a good point. States are generally reciprocal when it comes to licensing and registration issues however the big exception is for vehicles which are classified by many states as off-road vehicles such as ATV's and golf carts.

there are other such laws governing folks traveling from one state to another which logically ought to be standardized but aren't .... example : towing two trailers .... like a golfcart trailer behind a 5th wheel .... one can be perfectly legal in their home state, go on vacation, and get a ticket in another state .... how one is treated driving a Elio type vehicle with a motorcycle tag into a state where that isn't legal is a mystery at this point to me .... another much discussed similar issue is helmets .... hopefully, such issues will be resolved soon

From my research, and discussions with Elio's VP of Gov't Affairs, I don't believe it will be an issue at all. Unlike the examples we have been talking about the Elio will be NHTSA certified as an on-road motorcycle as such it falls within the established reciprocal licensing and registration laws so as long as you are properly licensed and registered in your home state you will be fine in other states.

Yes helmets are the big question however Elio Motors is working on this heavily. It looks like they have a good chance of getting this issue resolved in nearly all states in 2015 but their is always the chance they will have a few stragglers to concentrate on in 2016. I just happened to see some pictures taken just yesterday of EM VP of Gov't Affairs Joel Sheltrown in Nebraska with a reservation holder and they were testifying before a state legislative committee on this issue which I know helps a lot over just a company coming in asking for a legal exemption.

having the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) - http://www.nhtsa.gov/ - certification is huge .... in their work with all 50 states to have laws updated for what is a new national industry, they are paving the way for their customers to travel without undue restrictions

So stick a forth dolly wheel some where the law does not say it has to touch the ground . Then it is a car.
I would rather see it stay a motorcycle.

I have to admit of all the states I explored trying to find information on MC requirements, Connecticut is the most unusual. I think there is one other state that, as of the date I did my research, the Elio would only be allowed to be driven on secondary roads at speeds up to 45mph - correction only on roads posted at 45mph or less and it is Maine. What on earth are these people thinking of! Surely they are not so set on being different that they will deny residents this wonderful means of transportation. Sigh. I'm sure glad I live in Oregon. :-) Z

Hey now this is pretty cool, good to hear. I live 15 mi from the NE border, would like to be able to drive my Elio in NE without a bleeping helmet. :D

I was smitten the first time I saw the Elio on the web (haven't yet in person) and jumped "All In" and have my Certificate #5486! Elio has been confident that all states will recognize this little wonder as a motorcycle for registration purposes, but a friend brought this to my attention from our state DMV:

"Three-Wheeled Vehicles: that have or are designed to have a driver’s seat that is completely enclosed and a motor which is not in the enclosed area are not motorcycles under Connecticut law, and may not be registered as motorcycles." [http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=810&q=430480]

Will they recognize it as a car? Will we be able to enjoy those anticipated inspiring trips along CT's highways and byways? Guess we just have to wait and see :)
WELCOME, from the Bayou State; Louisiana.

I know several people who have tried to register 3 wheelers in CT. If the vehicle is a sit in type, not t trike, and not on some list, its a no go. Fully enclosed, 2 or 3 wheels? DMV told me that it is simply illegal. In spite of a highly favorable display in he state.
WELCOME, Jimi! Pleasure to see you joining the "family."
