I continued to be totally amazed by so many of you that know sooooo much about how this stuff all works, My concern is what I perceive as the diminishing number of folks who are even interested in acquiring this knowledge - back in the day we took shop classes, there were trade schools, trade internships, and opportunity to get an entry level job to learn hands-on skills, and it wasn't perceived in any negative connotation . Today we have college graduates up to their ears in loans, who hire a tradesperson (p.c.) to change a light bulb- no one ever told them lefty lucy.....
thanks
We ARE a bunch of smart folks!! I give psychiatric advice, too....

I was one of those kids that took EVERYTHING apart to see how it worked (got my butt whooped more than a couple times for it too.). Even Tonka's weren't safe at my house. Luckily, I eventually got good at putting things back together!

Bert --- Actually with only one rear wheel there really is no alignment as such. No castor, 0°camber, 0° toe. As NSTG8R said the whole reason is to keep the car from crabbing down the road. As long as the wheel is centered, exactly aligned with the center point between the front wheels and is exactly verticle that's as good as it gets.

That was my question too . . . align with what? I'm having a hard time getting my head around this. Unless something is severely bent or broken, issues of toe and camber would seem to be meaningless.

If the rear wheel is trying to push the vehicle right or left while going straight the result will be:

Poor handling, the vehicle will try to turn the direction the rear wheel is guiding it.

This means the driver must keep pressure on the steering-wheel in the opposite direction to go straight.

High tire wear. The wheels will act as erasers against the road.

It’s kind of like driving in a curve all the time.

All of this causes higher than normal fuel consumption.

It will also cause driver fatigue from trying to compensate all the time.

I don’t know how the stability control will affect all of this?
