Sounds like they have the 5 remaining states that require helmets all lined up to look at changing the law for Elio drivers. Just updated today on the Elio blogs:

Let’s look at it on a state by state basis:

  • Nebraska: We have a sponsor in Senator Jim Smith. We are ready to go for the current legislation session.
  • Missouri: We are queued up and ready to go for the current legislation session in Missouri also. We are working with Senator Jay Wasson as our sponsor here.
  • Mississippi: Representative Steve Massengill is our sponsor and we expect this to be heard during the current session
  • West Virginia: Again we are on the current legislative session and have Senator Bob Beach as our sponsor.
  • North Carolina: Sponsor Representative John Torbett. We will be in North Carolina later this month to meet with Senator Warren Daniel staff.
Having a dedicated team working with strong sponsors and a compelling argument have made this process go amazingly well. We expect each of these to get to the floor this session and for these states to move away from the current laws for the Elio. The message is still clear and concise: three airbags, full reinforced steel roll cage, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control in an enclosed cabin. The Elio safety management system is similar to many vehicles on the road today and we are helping these few states understand that the Elio is in a different category, but very safe. If you live in one of these states, you may want to consider a letter or email to your senator or representative to positively support the legislation.

Cool! Sounds like THAT little hurdle is getting cleared out of the way right on schedule. I can't see how any legislative body could actually go on record saying people need to wear a helmet in an enclosed cabin. They would just come off looking stupid or like theey are promoting some hidden adgenda.

In North Caroiina, here is the website for Representative John Torbett:

It would be great if we had the proper name for the legislative law/bill that we are asking them to support, and if Elio had a sample format to show how to word your letter to the representative.

AMEN .... I'll be happy to get some emails on the way and it would sure help to know how to have the best impact

UPDATED: Bill has not been introduced yet in NC. See my other post here:

Okay, I think I may have found our bill on the North Carolina General Assembly website, after a bit of searching. I believe it is the bill "H109 - Motorcycle Helmet Law/Study". Here is Representative John Torbett's link along with other bills he sponsors etc:

http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/members/viewMember.pl?sChamber=H&nUserID=606

Bills he sponsors:

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/lastaction/lastaction.pl?Biennium=2013&SessionNumber=2

And the House Bill H109:

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2013&BillID=H109

This has to be it, right? It is the only bill I see that specifically has wording relating to possible exemptions. From Edition 3 of the bill:

1 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
2 AN ACT TO DIRECT THE JOINT LEGISLATIVE TRANSPORTATION OVERSIGHT
3 COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THE LAWS OF THIS STATE AND OTHER STATES
4 RELATING TO THE USE OF MOTORCYCLE HELMETS, AND TO CONSIDER
5 WHETHER THE STATE'S MOTOR VEHICLE LAWS SHOULD BE AMENDED TO
6 PROVIDE CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS TO THE REQUIREMENT THAT ALL
7 OPERATORS AND PASSENGERS ON MOTORCYCLES OR MOPEDS WEAR A
8 SAFETY HELMET.

EDIT: It is also noted that they are meeting later this month with Senator Warren Daniel staff. Here is his information page from the NCGA site:
