as noted early on, please don't take anything I think I remember as being fact, I could easily be way off .... the search feature on this forum and I usually experience a failure to communicate .... as best I can recall it was during a rather lengthy conversation about the differences in the standard manual tranny and the optional auto tranny

Jim

I could see the manual sharing oil with the engine, and that may be what you heard (as manuals usually take oil, not tranny fluid), but I can't see this being the case with the auto as they require tranny (hydraulic) fluid...

here again, as I recall (disclaimers already stated  ) the auto and manual transmissions are basically the same with the auto shifting controlled by some computer and/or paddle shifters .... we really need somebody who knows something to jump in here .. ;)

None of the so called Autos in any of our equipment use transmission fluid or HYD oil anymore. They all use a lube that is pretty much oil with some additives. CAT Uses TO4 in transmission and axels now. Others use a 10 weight engine oil ect. Un likely engine and trans would use a common lube in the same system. The contamination would be pretty high. But using he same product in two closed systems would not be un heard of.
Harley has no problem using 20/50 engine oil in transmission and engine, some run it in the primary also. On the Sprty the primary and transmission share the same lube
What many are unaware of it gear lube and engine oil viscosity are figure in a different way. 20/50 engine oil and 75-140 gear oil are about the same.

from what has been stated, the engine and transmission share a common oil supply which necessitates a short change interval .... no clue how much oil it will hold .... this is just one area where I'm looking forward to much more specific info

Jim
I would like to see a reference on this...

IAV has the power-train development task. They have said they where looking at an Aisin 5 speed manual and a version of the same gearbox that is computer controlled. Some manuals use ATF or automatic transmission fluid as the operating oil. I had a Mustang built back in 1990 like that, so nothing real new.

There are lots of very expensive Ueber Auto's out there, lets not try to turn this one into one. Automated manuals tend to return better mileage than manuals today simply due to how people choose to drive..
