Citron (SP?) 2CV- came right out of the dash
Citroen. And the Renault 4L had one coming out of the dash, sort of like a cue ball on a short stick. You pushed it, pulled it, or twisted it to shift. NOT the greatest set-up ever; you try swooping around the huge traffic circle on the Champs Elysee with that sucker. those were the days.

it took 3 gears to get thru intersection? I have to be missing something
Traffic circle with 8 roads coming into it, and French drivers circling like sharks looking for their opening. Plus one or two traffic lights. The 4L was a grossly underpowered little pipsqueak of a car -- there were 4 of us in it (we'd rented it for a weekend from a dealer in Caen, drove it to Paris) -- we actually were able to pick it up and scoot it sideways into a too-tight parking space. It needed all the help it could get from working the tranny. This was in the fall of '67. 1967, not 1867!
