Other than the Honda CRX/Del Sol, the Mazda RX-7 and Miata were designed as a sports cars, no one has mass produced a two seat economical commuter car for sale in the US. Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Mazda and others have built Kei cars and City Cars, but they were never designed to be sold outside of the Asian markets.

I believe the Smart Fortwo was a two seat economical commuter car. It was sold in the US. It was gas powered then both gas and electric and then just electric. It is currently no longer sold in the US. I had a 2008 and have 2012. I think they are fun to drive. I am going to replace the 2012 with a non-Smart car since they abandoned the US market.

The Honda Insight was produced from 2000 to 2006 as an economical 2 seater with hybrid power. Yes it was exported to the US.
