"UNC tops preseason coaches poll; defending champs Duke to open No. 4
The University of North Carolina will start the 2015-16 basketball season as the co-No. 1 team in the USA Today Coaches Poll released Thursday.
The Tar Heels earned a poll-best 12 first-place votes, but accumulated the same voting points (749) as Kentucky, who received 11 No. 1 nods.
This marks the fourth time in the last nine years the Tar Heels will start the season ranked No. 1 in the nation by the coaches. They were also No. 1 in the preseason in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2011-12.
UNC, who finished last season No. 12 in the coaches poll, returns four starters in senior forward Brice Johnson, senior guard Marcus Paige, junior forward Kennedy Meeks and sophomore forward Justin Jackson.
“It’s a nice honor,” said UNC head coach Roy Williams. “The last three times we were number one in the preseason we had very good teams. I hope it will work out that way this year. We have veteran players who have gotten better each year."
