If this news pans out then it may actually make Takata the smart choice for EM. Takata has been researching this issue for some time which has likely given their engineers insight into what the problem is and how to resolve it. The rest of the air bag industry is apparently just discovering the issue may not be limited to Takata but actually an issue with the one of the core technologies used in air bags thus something which they should all be working on.

Takata has come up with the perfect solution. It combines the 5 point harness, and answers the concerns about how to deal with high heat and humidity.

Forget the drivers air bag, why not just go with a 5 point harness?
That works pretty good for NASCAR.

It restricts your movement so much that you would have a lot of people that wouldn't wear it at all.
That's part of the idea behind airbags; to make up for the freedom of movement you have while driving.

So do air bags plus seat-belt do better than just seat-belt? I was under the impression that air bags were to make up for those people that refuse to wear seat-belts.

NASCAR builds some of the safest vehicles on the planet ... they use roll cages, head restraints and harnesses, they do not use air bags .... unfortunately, no matter how effective, its not practical or even safe to use the NASCAR head restraints (doing so would create a safety hazard in vision reduction) ... it has to be tough for manufactures to provide the level of safety we all would like but to do so in a manner that the public will accept
