Saw an episode of "How Do They Do It?" where VW uses something even larger than this if you buy a car at the factory in Germany. You conclude your business with the salesman, and the robotic warehouse brings your new car to the showroom. Pretty neat.

The Smart car machine doesn't sell cars. It passes out brochures.

There is a Carvana delivery site in Nashville that works like a vending machine. You buy the car online, then go to the "kiosks" to pick it up. You actually put a special token into the machine in one of the three delivery kiosks at the site, and it brings the car from the tower to your kiosk. The article I read says that if you don't live near Nashville, they will provide a $200 subsidy for airfare, and free "white glove" shuttle service from the airport. You don't even actually pay for it until you drive it out of the building, and they have a seven-day no-questions-asked return policy.
