He wanted to think of other things instead of racing 24/7. His dreams were about racing. He was glad to walk away in good health. I forget the 3rd reason.

I saw his "official" farewell speech yesterday, he couldn't either; he got too choked up.
But he is leaving on his terms.

Every year drivers have to re-apply to the series; it's sort of like a license renewal; Carl had done his; so retiring wasn't public at that time. He made this decision recently.
I keep wondering if there is some kind of medical problem that just came to light recently; like the same thing that happened to Dale Junior. Carl has taken some pretty brutal hits over his career, and all of that brain rattling is catching up with him. I don't know, but something is pretty odd about the whole situation.

I would like to see him go to being a NASCAR announcer/commentator. He talks a lot of "Common sense".

I agree, Jeff is doing a great job for Fox, but the guys at the end of the year could really use some help; Carl would fit right in.
Even do the commercials too.
