With current battery tech and the limited volume in an Elio I doubt an all electric Elio would have an acceptable range. I drive about 84 miles for a round trip commute.

Hybrid might work, but for my commute I'd probably end up using gas more than electric. So the added weight and complexity of the hybrid parts would be wasted.

Just out of curiosity, given the space constraints of the Elio, if there were an all electric option what would the likely range be? Still has to carry two passengers, still has to have at least the current trunk space. Can't change the overall dimensions or design of the vehicle.

Seems like the small space available in order to keep the aerodynamics the same would really hurt space for batteries which would drastically limit range. Since I know virtually nothing about batteries, EV's, typical range I'm only guessing here. But I doubt one charge could even get me to work, 42 miles away. And with no charging facilities at work that option is a complete no go for me.

And you have to have some place to put the hybrid battery and associated electronics. They are still bigger than Elio's trunk space.

I own and drive the most-efficient hybrid ever made: The 2000-2006 Honda Insight. Still the all-time record holder for highway mileage rated at 61 MPG (routinely exceeded by 10-30 MPG in real-world driving). Took 17 years for the Prius to finally beat it in combined MPG just this year.

That 61 MPG is still a long way from 84 MPG. Even if that 84 MPG is wildly overestimated by 15 MPG or more, it will still beat the all-time record holder. Gas-Powered Awesome.

I am often amazed at how poorly some people spell, must have failed spelling in school...
