It's just a Cycle with a top, right? I see no problem if they stick to the engine and torque they say they will use and the weight the Elio is now. After all it's not but a few hundred pounds more than a Goldwing.

What's interesting Wayne, is really this is a motorcycle, IMO, only in the sense of the Federal govt. It's got an automotive engine as stated by IAV, it's got automotive driver controls, it's got automotive tires. Sure it seats two people like a motorcycle, and you sit in the middle like a motorcycle, but in terms of driving in the mountains and the vehicle's performance, seems like it's more of a "car" than a "motorcycle".

Agreed, driving this in the Rockies should be no problem. :-)

Funny! Brings back early driving memories..........scraping icy condensation off the interior side of the VW's cabin windows in the winter......but damn did it ever have good traction on the ice and snow! I hope the Elio has a good and efficient 'climate control'.......if not we have the personal experience to deal with it.

One of the best things about old VW's, was to see them driving around, made up of two, three or more different colors. I think some people must have been doing it on purpose.

I've got a great idea! The Pike's Peak Climb! A stock or even modified Elio would undoubtedly create a new category in the race and since it is purely a race against the clock, almost any time posted would be a record! Thus getting PR and interest for Elio. Next year someone will further modify and improve it and the time posted will drop and continue to create interest. Seems like a win/win situation. Any of you gear heads interested? The beauty of it is that the investment to get not only Elio's name out there but the sponsors as well is so reasonable. And the impact? Immediate!

This was actually done with the Morgan back in the '20's with great success. their 3-wheeled vehicles dominated for several years.

The thing you gotta watch coming down are the brakes...I had a set of front brakes get so hot on a car coming down the Rockies one time that the plastic wheel covers actually deformed from the heat...
I know, right? We had a lady driving our Van who rode the brakes coming down the mountain and heated them up so much they were smoking. She asked me to drive from there on (I was 16 and it was some kind of youth retreat). I just put it in low and let the Transmission take the heat. My F-350 has a great 4X4 Low that I used coming down Pike's Peak. The guy with the laser thermometer checked my brakes, looked at me, looked at his thermometer, and waved me on my way. There were several cars pulled over waiting on their brakes to cool. Granted, it probably wouldn't be great to have the transmission work that hard all the time but it worked then. The Elio should have a pretty long stroke and good torque which usually translates as a good ability of the engine to slow you down... Maybe.
