There are some genuinely idiotic comments responding to this article. One gripes that Paul Elio is a multimillionaire and so should not be asking the little guys for money. Where do they get this stuff? Paul's driving a minivan (and not a new one, either). No multimillionaire he!

Other people are yelling scam. They think Elio's asking for the whole $7K up front, which is not the case. They are asking for money when you actually purchase your car.

Good grief. People can be so stupid, as well as ignorant. But IMO Elio has not communicated the commitment thing well, because they should have anticipated people's fears and headed them off at the pass, clearly, unmistakably, and right up front. Now they had better do some quick clean-up or this whole effort could fizzle.

Wasn't it the [DoE] ATVM Loan that killed Aptera a few years ago? Certainly, it doesn't hurt EM to apply for the Loan, but it might be kinda tough to get the 65k+ "commit-to-purchase" pledges required to even be considered for the loan.

As of today, there's only 56,820 reservations. BTW, those aren't CTPs. I don't know what percentage of the reservations are CTPs, but I'd wager its less than half - probably a lot less.

People are making it up that "Elio must have 65,000 commitments to even be considered for the loan."

Fact: Elio will stop taking reservations at 65,000. Reason: not stated.

Fact: except in extraordinary circumstances, DOE will not consider non-binding reservations sufficient proof of market demand.

Fact: while Elio thinks they do meet the 'extraordinary circumstances" requirement, they are seeking commitment letters to make certain DOE will have its concerns met without relying on "exceptional circumstances."

People should base their statements and opinions on the facts. Alarmist speculations do no one any good.

Agree with the sentiment, but this one contains a bit of speculation:

The current $7300 and $7000 lock-in prices will not be valid for new reservations after reaching the 65,000 total. It isn't clear whether EM will cut off reservations, issue a new locked-in price or go back to only quoting a "target price" at that point.

Thank you for clarifying that.
